Will these A Levels work?

I want to take English, Geography and French at A Level. There’s a course at Cambridge - human, social and political science - that I’m interested in. It has no course requirements other than A*/A/A and some colleges may require an A* in an essay based subject. They recommend English, History and a modern language. I’m worried that even if I got A* in English or Geography and then got an A in French, not having History would weaken my application and get me rejected. Is this likely?

I should have a few things to hopefully strengthen my application such as grade 6 in piano and guitar if I take those by then. I’m also going to get a reference from my MP. I’m 15 and have been doing quite a lot of volunteering for my local party, so I’m hoping by the time I’m 18 I’ll have a lot of experience under my belt to add when I apply. Should I consider taking History even if I struggle with it far more than Geography?

Cambridge don’t recommend taking all three for HSPS - they recommend taking one or more of those three. A recommendation is not a preference or a requirement. You can take three sciences and still get into HSPS. English and French are more than enough, never mind geography. As long as you meet the grade requirements you will be fine. Your UCAS reference will usually be done by your school, so a reference from your MP won’t do anything for your university applications. Volunteering is good to put down on your personal statement, as it is a super curricular (something you do outside of your studies that relates to your course). All your other activities are irrelevant. You should be aware that the structure of the UCAS personal statement will be changing for 2026 applicants (applying in 2025 for 2026 entry).

Thanks. I’m not too familiar with the application process sorry, just trying to do anything I can to improve it haha. I was just talking to my dad about it and he felt history would be very important for a course involving political science, but the more I read into it, it honestly doesn’t seem that necessary. Thanks for the advice

Might be worth getting a mentor for HSPS. Zero Gravity and Project Access could be useful
