Joining societies as a postgrad

Hi!

I’m starting my masters degree at Leeds next month, and I really want to join the history society but I’m worried I’ll be the only postgrad there!

I didn’t have the typical social experience as an undergrad and I really want to make up for it in some way, so is it normal for a postgrad to join a society?

I know it’s not as common compared to undergrads but I’m really scared I’ll stick out, I’m still 21 so there probably will be undergrads older than me but it’d feel weird being the only postgrad there 😭

Hey there :flower2:

In my experience being a postgrad makes absolutely no difference to society membership - the society will almost definitely be happy to have you join them. If you are worried, you could drop the society president an email saying that you're a postgrad and ask if it is ok to join, but they will almost for certain say YES! As for being concerned that you will be the only postgrad at the society once you go along to their meetings and events you will find a real mixture of ages and stages of university life. The majority may be undergrads, but just remember that the majority of students in the uni are undergrads anyway so the pool will be a lot greater for them.

Societies are a perfect way of meeting like minded students who have the same interests and hobbies as you do and I've made so many friends through society membership, which I would never have made otherwise. You will really enjoy being a member!

Hope your first event goes well!
