law work experience

how am i meant to apply to vacation schemes/ general work experience if i have no previous experience to mention in my applications? the advice is always that non-legal work experience is also relevant but i don't even have that because how do you apply to that without previous experience? going into my second year and feeling very lost

I am starting my law course this September and as I am writing this I am sat at a law firm getting work experience simply by asking a lawyer if he’d get me work experience and I mentioned how I don’t need to get paid whatsoever. I suggest you call law firms and ask for unpaid law work experience as they’re more likely to give provide you with work experience that’s unpaid, but your still gaining experience so it’s a win-win situation. DO NOT GIVE UP AFTER CALLING JUST A FEW LAW FIRMS. It’s really important you call as many or all the law firms in your city so you get work experience.
Good luck!!
Also forget to mention I have no previous work experience apart from volunteering in an asylum seeker office once before, so don’t worry about that!

how did you sell yourself to the firms other than mentioning unpaid experience? did you mention a specific area of interest that they deal with?

So I am planning to do immigration Law and I guess you could say I have some sort of previous work experience in a Law firm ( barely counts as I was just volunteering and I was under 18 so not taken seriously) but ever since I remember I have been filling in forms and doing applications regarding asylum seeker settlements or applications to get British passport and really anything that had to do with Law, I have been doing that for my family and family friends so I am quite familiar with the process in a way, so the Law firm that gave me a spot today actually work with refugees and asylum seekers so it was good for them to have me around as I could help out in terms of filling in forms or doing applications whilst they focus on other things. But really not having those experiences is FINE, many Law firms take in students and allow them to shadow and take small steps a time. The solicitor I spoke to today mentioned how he only started with work experience once he was in his 3rd or 4th year of uni so it is okay to feel ‘lost’ as your just in your second year and got time.Hopefully you’ll get some work experience soon!
