Which course is a better 5th choice when applying to Medicine?

I need to get all my choices on my UCAS form filled before September or October, but I'm stuck on choosing my 5th choice that'll boost my chances of getting into university and then eventually into medicine (if I don't get into it the first time). I'm trying to choose between Biomedical Science (which people said there aren't many job prospects even if it's IBMS accredited), Medical science, and Pharmacy. I love Chemistry more than Biology, but am willing to do any degree that will either allow for a transfer to Medicine or graduate entry Medicine. Which course out of the ones I listed (or any other appropriate ones) would be best? I'd also prefer it to not take too long since I want to get to Medicine as soon as possible, but if there's no other way then it'll have to take some time.
Hey there, thanks for posting a question in the Medicine forum.

Honestly you’d be better leaving it blank and reapplying for undergrad med in the next cycle. It’s the cheapest, shortest and least competitive route.
Note also you can leave the 5th choice blank now and add it in later before the January deadline
Do you want to do medicine ? Really do medicine? Then do medicine.

If you don't get in the first year, take a gap year and apply again. Medicine is a 2 year process for many many people.

If you apply to a course with a specific intention of trying to transfer at the end of the first year, then be very careful. It is far far more competitive than normal medicine and you will be limited to one university and you will have chewed up one year of your student loan unnecessarily.

For graduate entry you will have more choices to apply for BUT it is way way more competitive than undergrad medicine and you will have chewed through 3 years of undergrad funding and your options for grad med funding will need to include an element of self funding.

As above. You can leave it blank. I know some that put a 5th because they like to have a fifth. And there is a psychological benefit to having an offer in hand if your med offers don't come through at an early stage as it can feel wierd when all your friends apply after you and.get offers before you.

But if you want med. Do med.

If you want biomed as a degree, and a career, look at career options and decide whether you want an accredited degree or not and apply appropriately.

Thank you so much, that's really good advice. I never really looked into the money aspect too much, I've just been too scared that my UCAT won't be high enough to get into med school, but I still have over 20 days before I sit my UCAT so I'm just overly anxious and am trying to think of plan Bs.

Just focus on the UCAT for now. You have plenty of time

And don’t forget the SJT. I sometimes think with the SJT the trick is to think about perhaps not what you might do in a given situation, but about what is the right thing to do in that situation.

I know that is not what is asked, but if you think about everything with putting the patients care, safety and rights in the forefront then You aren’t far off. And then you end up finding that what you would do and what you should do are the same thing. Which is always a bonus !

You can also move the UCAT to later dates and different locations - I put off doing mine by moving it 3 times, it paid off as I got a great score for the additional prep. This will let you be fully prepared and feel ready on the day.

Thanks for that too. Do you have any tips for the other sections too? My best is QR, but it's only 700 and I want it higher just in case the other sections flop.
