The Student Room Group

Got a studio without applying for one (Birks Grange Block H).

All of my accommodation preferences where en-suite or standard, none of them included Studio.
I got my accommodation offer today and was given a studio room, This is much more expensive than the other accomodations and I will be without any flatmates.
Is this a mistake??
What should I do to fix this.
Hi @EQUAL.

I am sorry to hear that there has been a mistake with your accomodation allocation. Have you contacted the Exeter Accomodation Support Team? They handle all accomodation issues and would be the best point of contact to sort this.

You can email them here : [email protected] or call them on 0300 555 0444.

They are open Monday to Friday 9:00 to 17:00.

I am sure they will be able to help out!

I called and they said they was nothing that they could do. This feels really unfair as i cannot afford a higher price and I stated that the most important factor for me was room type when prompted. I gave them no indication that I would be able to pay for studio. I never went through clearing.
Hi Equal

I'm sorry to learn that you did not get the accommodation that you had hoped to. There is a high demand for University owned accommodation and you will note from our applying page (https://www.exeter.ac.uk/study/accommodation/applyingandpaying/), that for those that apply by the accommodation guarantee, we do not guarantee you’ll be offered one of your four preferences from your application, so you could be offered a room in a residence you haven’t considered. Unfortunately you will not be the only student that has not been offered their preferential room so please don't take this situation personally.

As soon as you join the University at the end of September you can make a request to change rooms by contacting the accommodation team on SID. This is not guaranteed and may not be straight away as it will depend on availability but does commonly occur and you can view details here; https://www.exeter.ac.uk/study/accommodation/current-residents/moving/

There is another option called Bargaining Rooms which you may like to contact the accommodation team about to see if this could be something to work for you.

In terms of making friends, a lot of the blocks have social areas which are used a lot, especially in blocks of studios so as you encounter other students on your course, in clubs and societies and just around your own halls there will be relaxed places to hang out and get to know each other.

I do hope that the options above are helpful and that overall you have a smooth transition to living and studying here in Exeter.

Hey! I'm in the exact same position as you. I was waiting to hear back from occupational health and ended up switching courses. I heard back today with a studio at Birks Grange, block H aswell. I called them and was told that it is sometimes possible to request to switch rooms further into the term, but there is nothing they can do now.
I've just had to accept this considering I don't have any other choice. I guess we'll have to make an extra effort to socialise and everything. Do you know if there are any groups for our accom? It would be nice to get to know people a bit before!
