A level resits (URGENT!!!)

(I am posting again as my last post got no replies) I have just received my results and achieved BBC and i am planning to resit.

Mid January my grandma passed away, who i was very close to, and it took a toll on my revision & motivation leading up to my exams in May. Can i use this as extenuating circumstances as a reason for resitting? I am asking because i wasn't diagnosed with depression or anything. Also she didn't pass away during exam period so i don't know if it will be valid reason.

If so, will they ask for evidence (for e.g. death certificates) ?

Who asking for extenuating circumstances for your resit? Wouldn't the simple desire for better grades be sufficient?

Some universities don't accept resits or put you as second preference unless you have extenuating circumstances

Ah, that makes more sense. (I'd assumed you had to justify it to your school / college or something.)

You are right, some universities get a bit fussy about resits (although the vast majority do not). I suspect that these unis have no hard and fast rules as to what are considered sufficient extenuating circumstances to accept a resit candidate.

Do you think that the death of your grandmother is why you got the grades you did?

Not the sole reason but is definitely a factor, she played a big part in my life and i found it difficult to focus on school and revision until about a few weeks before my exams. We also had family members coming over quite frequently so revising at home was difficult.

I have emailed universities i am interest in but i doubt they will get back to me anytime soon because of clearing and stuff. I don't want to bother retaking if they wont consider me. I do have an offer from an OK university but i am not keen on going there and would rather resit.

Understood. Thank you.

Can I infer from the above that the only universities you're interested in are universities which hàve a stated policy of not accepting resits (or of being less keen on them at least) unless there are exceptional circumstances?

about 2/4 of the universities I am interest in say they don’t accept resits or will put you as second preference (unless you have circumstances)

You wrote above that you, "don't want to bother retaking if they wont consider me." What about the two which are happy to accept resit candidates? Will they also accept your BBC grades?

Yes they do accept resits and i would not mind going to them but i like to keep my options open and their is still no guarantee they will accept me as they are quite competitive. That's why im considering the other two as well.

I just want to know if my grandma passing away mid Jan is too much of a stretch or valid extenuating circumstances !?

Sorry, that's not a question that I (or I suspect anyone else) can answer. :frown:
