Suggestions:

Borrow books from your local library.

Buy ebooks or digital copies

Look for second hand copies of books from used book search engines - you can sometimes have good finds for £5 or less on Amazon, Ebay, Albis, etc.

Go to your local uni library and read the books that they have available from your reading list - if they are popular, they would be in the short term loan section. However, if they are not, you can sometimes pick them off the shelf.

Personally, I wouldn't bother buying the book unless I have read through a good portion of it from the library. Not many academic texts are well written, cheap, or good books i.e. they're the sort where you only read if you have to, then pile them up in a dingy corner. There are some that are worth having in your collection, but you have to really look for them.
