what is the difference between sheffield hallam uni and university of sheffield?

Someone told me that the University of Sheffield is for medicine, while you can't do that at Hallam University. I don't think that's true, but can someone explain the differences? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately I don’t think Sheffield Hallam does an undergraduate medicine course. However they do have courses like biomedicine. They are just 2 different unis that happen to both be in Sheffield. Uni of Sheffield is a Russel group and Sheffield Hallam isn’t . Uni of Sheffield does medicine but Hallam doesn’t. Id recommend looking at individual uni websites to see what courses they offer.

Hi there!

Yes, each university offers slightly different courses so if it was a medicine degree you wanted to do, you could do this at the University of Sheffield. This is a link to the biomedical science course that Hallam offers: https://www.shu.ac.uk/courses/biosciences-and-chemistry/bsc-honours-biomedical-science/full-time if you were interested in doing this 🙂

I would recommend to have a look online at each university at which courses they offer and see which ones you like the sound of the most and are what you want to do. You can also come to some open days for each university and you can go to some talks about each subject and see what you like the sound of! Here are the open day dates coming up for Hallam this year: https://www.shu.ac.uk/visit-us/open-days and I am sure there will be lots for the University of Sheffield too.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.

Lots of cities have two universities, one is the older university, the other is originally a polytechnic college, focussing on more practical subjects, and converted to university status more recently eg Sheffield Uni v Sheffield Hallam, Manchester Uni v Manchester Met, Bristol Uni v UWE, Cambridge v ARU, Liverpool v Edge Hill etc. They are all entirely independent universities.

Medicine as a degree requires a lot of integration with a large teaching hospital and more commonly, but not exclusively, that happens with the older, original university, and not the more modern institution.
