That's such a cool topic Meredith!
What do you find yourself struggling with the most at the moment? :holmes:

Yup, just trying to balance politeness/their time with getting a straight answer. Academics can be peculiar folk.

It's like this in the white collar workplace too, tbf, so this does prepare you a little bit for that!

I just want to make a difference, but they don't seem too keen on the women's angle lol.

It's tricky because you do need something that's achievable in 6-8 months with no budget.
Have they made other suggestions instead?

No suggestions. I don't think I'd need a budget, just access to information, which I can get from local services

Well that's good, because undergrad dissertations don't tend to get a budget!
My point is the scope of the project is limited by those two factors and therefore the majority of third year disses struggle to "make a difference".

Love the gif! @04MR17 and thanks for setting up such a helpful thread. When I was a student I did my dissertation looking at the relationship between fans and producers in two of my favourite TV shows. I was so anxious about writing my dissertation and for the results, I always tended to put a lot of pressure on myself and go in panic mode, but then by the end everything worked out and I was so proud of myself and my work. So, just a reminder to anyone else who feels the same way, that it can be a daunting and scary process, but you just have to believe in yourself and put the work and time in.

I attended a few sessions with an academic advisor who'd go through my work and offer feedback, so worth having a look at the support offered to you by your university. Ask for feedback early, and often with your supervisor too.

It's so important to also have the work life balance, ensure you're taking care of your mental health and wellbeing! Take regular breaks, get enough sleep, eat well, go for walks and get that fresh air. I'd also say start your research early, which I'm glad I did.

I picked a topic I was really interested in too which made the process a lot more enjoyable

Good luck everyone!! You've got this 🤗

Becky

Quite normal. It's an extension of blank page syndrome I think. Advice would be to write it even if it may be "wrong".

Hey there 😃

My name is Julia, and I’m in my final year of a Bachelor’s in Psychology at De Montfort University.

For my dissertation, I explored myths and misconceptions in popular psychology among psychology students, along with factors that might contribute to increased belief in them. It was such an interesting topic, but wow - it also turned out to be way more complex and challenging than I expected 😅

I submitted my dissertation two weeks ago, and now I’m eagerly waiting for feedback. I poured so much effort and heart into this project, so I’m really excited (and a little nervous) to see how it turned out!

If you’re struggling with choosing a dissertation topic, here’s my biggest advice: pick something that genuinely excites you - something within your course that sparks your curiosity and makes you want to learn more. Trust me, it makes a huge difference in your motivation, performance, and overall experience of writing your dissertation 💡✍️

I hope it will be helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directly through The Ambassador Platform.

Take care,

Julia
