Autism disability help at Durham 2024

Hi, I was wondering about how good the autistic disability help is at Durham?
I'm starting this year, doing an undergraduate in psychology and tbh I'm a bit overwhelmed with everything. I got diagnosed with ASD around 2 years ago, so I'm rather high masking but the whole process has been a bit much for me since I'm doing everything practically by myself.
Wondering if the supports as good as it seems online.
What kinda support would you suggest.
How to make friends?!

hi! i apologise for not being able to provide any useful anecdotes (i'm also starting this year) but i wanted to ask - are you participating in the early arrival programme? i'm also a high-masking autistic and i'm hoping this will be a pleasant opportunity for us to settle into the environment and make friends prior to the havoc of there being many people.

like you said, hopefully durham's support system is as brilliant as it's depicted online. the adjustments they provide sound lovely! if you're in doubt about anything, perhaps contacting [email protected] would be of use because they might be able to clarify uncertainties, provide reassurance and make additional adjustments for you.

best wishes :h:

Hi both, my daughter attended the early arrival last year. She found it helpful for settling in . Help wise they're pretty supportive and honestly they couldn't do enough for us last year with regards to accommodation and helping get DSA and they are always happy to help . However there's no strictly ASD/Neurodiverse soc.. (not that she's aware of anyway, could be wrong?) and because she's so high masking there has been some things she's personally found challenging socially but she's overcome a lot of those challenges ..She's also had meetings within her college to help her this year with hopefully finding her people. So overall, I would say Durham are as supportive as they seem online and willing to help not just on the initial freshers part 🙂

I’m another ASD student starting in September. I registered for the early arrival programme, but haven’t heard anything since results day - I’m sure it is coming though.

I’ve done some research and SU Disability and Carers Association run a Neurodiversity Group which may be worth joining.
