maths applicant gap year ideas

Hi, I am planning to take a gap year and reapply for Maths/Maths+Econ next year since my A-level grades exceeded my predicteds. I have spoken to some unis and they all mentioned how I would need to mention in my personal statement how I am going to keep up with my maths in the year. I will be doing TMUA in the middle of October, but was wondering if you have any ideas of what maths applicants usually do in the rest of their gap years to demonstrate how they are keeping on top of their maths. thanks!

Hi!

I didn't do a gap year, however, I would suggest doing a few supercurricular activities across the year. For example, find a particular area of maths that interests you and read up on that subject (you can then talk about your reflections in your personal statement). To keep your maths knowledge strong it might be good to see if you can start tutoring younger students as this will keep everything fresh. If you are eligible for any maths challenges they would also help, however, I'm not sure if you have to be in school to do most of these.

I hope this helps give you a few ideas! 🙂

I did a gap year and I applied post-qual. I taught myself extra Further Maths modules, I did STEP classes and I tutored A-Level Maths.
My son just did an enforced gap year due to illness. He didn't do anything at all to "keep up" with his maths. He did get a full-time job as a data analyst instead, mentioned that in his personal statement and received the same five offers from his choices as last year. Doing the TMUA in Oct should be enough but if you want to make sure maybe read some of the books in your preferred unis' book lists for Maths students. There is another current thread which has a list of unis which publish their lists. Good luck.
