first year internships

Hi, I'm starting first year in a few weeks, and wanted to know when should I start looking and applying for internship?
Also, what things should I put in my cover letter for my applications?
Thanks .

Hi @apple6258 !

You must be so excited to start your university journey! What university will you be going to and what will you be studying?

In my experience, internships aren't really offered for 1st years. 1st year is all about getting to grips with university life and getting to understand your subject. If you want to start looking for work in first year, you might want to consider a summer role or a part time role you can fit around your studies. You might find jobs are available on campus!

You can start looking for internships in 2nd year and aim for something during the summer before your final year (this can be useful to have on your CV as you prepare for finding work during 3rd year for after you graduate), but again, it doesn't necessarily have to be an internship, just some relevant experience will do.

Many companies will offer graduate internship schemes so this is probably the best thing to look into during your 3rd year. Some university degrees also have a "year in industry" element which gives you the opportunity to undertake work experience as part of your course too, so you should have lots of options!

It's great you're thinking so far ahead, don't forget your university will have a careers advice section so make use of them during your studies to help you figure out the best thing to do.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions.

Enjoy the start of your university journey!
Gabby
