Working in Southampton

Where in Southampton can i get a job whilst getting my degree. My maintenance loan is not enough for my accom alone and my parents cant help out. or are there any good agencies i could use that don't require experience

I have been at Southampton Uni for 4 years now so have had a range of jobs.

Student Ambassador - I would recommend this to everyone. There are shifts throughout the year for many different event (open days, tours, sports events etc.) and the pay is £12.82 per hour currently!

Jobs on campus - There are lots of places on campus to work too. For example the SUSU shop, Stag's (student bar), the SUSU reception and the Bridge (cafe). I have worked at the Hartley library reception in the past. These are great as campus is so easy to get to either walking from close by halls or on most of the bus routes.

Jobs in the city - Obviously down in the city there are lots of job opportunities, retail, restaurants, bars, supermarkets, cinemas, escape rooms the list goes on. Again these are very accessible on the busses. I would recommend looking on sites like Indeed to find these types of jobs.

Before applying for jobs I would also recommend looking into the number of contact hours you will have and how much independent work you are expected to do to ensure you don't take too much on.

Hey there,

It's awesome that you are interested in the on-campus job opportunities here at the University of Southampton. I was a student ambassador during my first year, and it is the best way to earn some extra money while having fun and making new friends. You can find more information about the Student Ambassador Scheme here.

Applying for these on-campus jobs is actually pretty straightforward. Many of these opportunities will be advertised during the fresher's week and annual career fairs. You also receive emails for specific subject based roles and university wide roles.

You can also check out the Students Union page here. They have many job opportunities like working for Stags, the locker, freshers assistant and so much more!

There is also the MyCareer Portal for finding part-time jobs and on-campus opportunities. This portal also provides many other resources like competitions and CV-building opportunities.
