Course Change in Second Year

I am a student completing my first year of study in the School of Computer Science.
I am still thinking whether to change course in my second year.

I am interested in Artificial Intelligence. The modules for the first year are exactly the same, so changes can certainly be accepted.
There are now two options: change course, or stay the course and study a more specialised course at postgraduate school if necessary.

In the Faculty of Computer Science, students can choose some modules related to Artificial intelligence. But ofc I can learn more specific things in AI degree course.

My goal is to work for a top it company such as Google in the future. If so, should I choose a computer science faculty that deals with a broader range of fields in order to increase my employment possibilities?
Or should I opt for a more specialized course where I can develop my expertise?

I want to know if a degree in Artificial intelligence or Robotics is worthwhile in the future. Cuz some people say that Artificial Intelligence and Robotics jobs will be replaced by AI. (I don't see it happening in the near future)

Anyway I'm happy if someone gives me some advices🙏

Thank you!

Ask your university and see what they say.

You can definitely make the change in course, as my friend did the same for her second year and the module situation was the same as yours. I would say to stick to comp sci, because it gives you an increased versatility and gives you broader prospects. AI is good too, but the broader option is better as it gives you more freedom. Personally, I studied computer science, but I did pick my optional modules to be artificial intelligence and chose to do my dissertation project in machine learning and AI - you could try to do the same.

If you want to aim high for the big companies, I would also recommend building up experience and taking additional online courses to bulk out your CV to give yourself better chances. Please do apply for internships and placements in the areas you want to specialise in to give yourself an edge and increase your prospects - this would be very beneficial for you.

I hope this helps - good luck!

All right! Thank you for your detailed response. This was helpful as I was very undecided about whether to change the course. Therefore, I thought it would be best to major in computer science as an undergraduate, and if I wanted to study a specialised field such as AI, I could do that in graduate school😄
