How does no claims discount work

I'm 20 now and have one no claims discount does this last forever? I saw online it lasts 2 years but some people tell me they have like 9 so how does it work if it expires after 2 years?

Never heard of it expiring? It lasts until you make a claim AFAIK. I have about 5 years no claims so if it expired after 2 years that would make things a bit complicated. Maybe it expires if you don't drive/insure for 2 years? but just a guess.

Your no claims discount builds over time. So for example if you go 8 years without making a claim, then you will have 8 years no claims.
The only way it could possibly expire is if you go for a while without any car insurance/have a break in cover. A year without cover is fine.
But as a general rule, car insurance providers won’t accept a no-claims bonus or discount (NCD) that’s older than two years. This may vary depending on the insurance provider, but there are few who’ll accept a no-claims bonus that’s lapsed for more than two years. Some insurance providers may still accept your no-claims bonus after this time. But it largely depends on how much no-claims you’ve built up and how long you’ve been without insurance.
