Thai Studies Leeds

Hii!

I was wondering if there was anyone studying the Thai Studies degree at the university of Leeds and whether or not they'd recommend it? I've become really interested in the degree but haven't been able to find any students studying it )

Hey, try joining fb groups or Uni of Leeds. Hopefully you’ll find someone there!!
Heyy~☆

I was thinking of doing Thai studies at Leeds too!
I talked to a student doing the degree at an open day who seemed to enjoy it, but it is hard finding others 😓

No fr because I feel like (and especially) on open days students (ESPECIALLY ones who are paid working for the uni) just don't give too much away. That says to me it means its not good... lmk if you find anyone actually open and honest!!

Hii! I've found that the Thai Studies department has a facebook page! I've found it's been quite useful in looking at what the course offers and such 🙂 Do you think you'll go to an open day for the university?
Ooo, I'll have to check the facebook page out, thank you for letting me know~ Yeahh, I'll definitely go to another Leeds open day in 2025! What about you? And what other courses are you thinking of applying to?

Yess, I've had a look and it looks really good! They have a lot of posts on students on their year abroad as well as posts on what graduates of the course have gone on to do which is really cool! I'll definitely be going to the open day next year! I've applied to just Thai Studies at Leeds right now but I've also been looking a lot at the combined Thai and Chinese Studies so I may ask to switch to that if I can 🙂 What about you? ^^

I scrolled through the Facebook and it does look really fun! I'm looking forward to the study abroad the most~☆ I think they go to Chiang Mai University! I applied to Thai studies and East Asian studies at Leeds but I have been considering changing to Thai and Chinese too. Have you been to Thailand before?

Me too!! Yess, I think the only option is Chiang Mai University and I've seen a few youtube videos on it and it looks so pretty! I'm pretty sure we also go abroad in out second year which is so cool! I've never been before but I really want to! My mum used to live in Beijing though and loved it there so that's why I'm considering adding on Chinese! I'm sure one of the study abroad options is Beijing as well for the Chinese part of the degree so I'd love to study abroad there as well! Have you visited Thailand before?

Ooo thanks, I'll have to check the videos out!! I love that it's second year that we go abroad to Thailand and I think we can take other courses at Chiang Mai like Chinese classes or history! I haven't been to Thailand before either, I'm really hoping to go during the summer to check out Bangkok and Chiang Mai~☆ And to have a look at the area around the university. That's so cool that your mum lived in Beijing 😮 I'd love to visit China one day too! I was looking at the modules for Thai studies and they all look so good, it'll be hard to choose which ones to take~ Are you more interested in the cultural or language aspect? 🌿 And what A-levels are you taking?

That sounds so cool!! I think it's better to go in our second year tbh so we can grow the confidence to speak early on! Ahh, that's so fun!! I might look into visiting Thailand during the summer as well since it would be really cool to see where we might be living for a year during the yeat abroad! I think for me I'm definitely more interested in the language aspect since I love learning languages so much! But it'll definitely be so fun to learn about culture as well! I took my A Levels a couple of years ago in Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology! I decided to take a couple of years to work and earn money though before starting uni 🙂 What about you?

Exactly! It would be great to properly learn the language while in Thailand and we get to go during the cool seasons~ I'm really looking forward to the language part as well, it would be lovely to speak Thai fluently~☆ I also like how we can learn not only Thai culture but also about China, Japan and Korea, there's a wide variety which I think is nice ^o^ Honestly taking a couple years off to work is really smart, especially since there's a year abroad to consider. What job do you have?🌸 Woahh, Bio and Chem are really impressive! I heard there's a lot of content and Psychology sound so interesting! I was thinking of taking a gap year to travel and earn money since accommodation is really expensive but I decided to work while doing A-levels instead which can be stressful 😅 I'm doing Photography, Criminology and Sociology A-levels with an EPQ on Thailand. It's quite a random mix of subjects. I know Leeds is the only one that does Thai studies but are there any other universities you're considering? 🪶

Yess, I'm so excited too! It will be so fun to travel around Thailand and explore lots of new places whilst there too! I'm currently working as a barista and I'm really enjoying it a lot! Luckily I'm able to keep working there over christmas and summer whilst at uni which is so nice! Ahh, what job do you have?? I can imagine it's really stressful as well as A Levels so I wish you luck!! I was also considering getting a small part time job in Leeds as well since accommodation is really pricy 😅 Your A Levels sound so interesting!! I would have loved to have done photography but my sixth form didn't offer it! I was looking into Sheffield and SOAS as well! What about you?

Ooo yeahh, it'll be really fun exploring~ I'd love to visit countries near by like Vietnam too! That's so nice that you can work during holidays! I can imagine being a barista can be stressful during rush hour but it's cool you know how to make so many drinks! Ahh thank youu! I work at a primary school looking after children after school, I started last month so I've just gotten used to it. I think I can work at holiday camps during christmas and summer which will be helpful. I'll probably get a job in Leeds too, hopefully nothing too stressful. The accommodation is really expensive :frown: I've been researching all the different accommodations and still have no idea which to choose. Are you thinking of getting en suite or shared? Photography is really fun but is also my hardest subject, there's a lot of homework but the lessons are relaxed. It's a shame your sixth form didn't offer it, not many do. Samee!! I've applied to Sheffield, SOAS and Manchester for East Asian Studies but Leeds is my top choice. Have you submitted your personal statement yet?🌸

Yesss, me too!! I've never been able to visit Asia before so I'd love to visit as many countries as I can whilst I'm there! I really love it but it can be so stressful, especially with christmas coming up 🥲 I'm working christmas eve this year as well which will be interesting 😅 That sounds so lovely!! Yess, many workplaces hire specifically for winter and summer breaks since it gets a lot busier then so it should be a lot easier to get a job during those months! I think a lot of universities hire students as well to work! I have a few friends that go to soas and they work at the student cafe and bar and earn quite good money and the hours are really flexible so that's definitely something you should look out for! Tbh I think I might just go for shared as even though I would probably prefer ensuite I'd rather save my money to really enjoy the year abroad! What accommodations are you interested in? I've not really looked properly but I'll have a look today! I have! What about you? ^^

Samee, I haven't been to Asia before too, it would be great to travel around while close by as the flights would be a lot cheaper. What are the top 5 countries you'd like to visit? 🍂 Oh nooo, not Christmas eve 😣 It does get really busy during Christmas, good luck!! Nicee, I'll definitely work during the holidays then! Ooo, It would be so convenient to work at the university and a cafe sounds really nice to work at. As much as I'd love to save the money, I think I'd have to have ensuite even through the shared option doesn't look too bad. At the moment Henry Price and Leodis are my favourite, they're both close to the humanities buildings and I think I saw Henry Price at an open day. I'm still not sure if I'll pick them but I'm hoping to find out more at the next open day! What about you? Yeahh, I sent it off in October~ It was so hard writing a personal statement for Thai studies because there weren't any examples online and my school couldn't help much since it's so niche but I'm happy with it ^o^ Do you listen to any Thai music? I like a couple artists but have been meaning to listen to more!🌸

Exactly!! Flights to Asia are so expensive so we'll have to make the most of the cheaper flight prices whilst we are there 😅 Ooo, I think for my me top 5 countries right now would be Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and France! What about you? Thank youu, hopefully all the customers are kind! Yess, it's so convenient! And the university would be the most understanding employer in terms of your uni schedule which is great! I had a look yesterday and tbh I think I'm more likely to go for an ensuite tbh, I liked the look of Henry Price, Devonshire Hall, and Leodis! Ahh, have you already gone to an open day then? I'll hopefully be going to the next one! I was invited to the offer holder day in March so I'll hopefully be going to that one! I know!! I can barely find anyone who studied Thai studies, let alone write a personal statement on it 🥲 I do!! So far I listen to Dept quite a lot but I really want to find more artists! What artists do you like? ^^ Also, have you studied any Thai before? I started studying the alphabet yesterday so hopefully I can memorise that by the end of the year!
Yesss, I'm going to ask at the open day what the term dates are like in Thailand, as if the holidays are different from the West it means we can travel during off peak time which will be cheaper too! Ooo, France is a good one since it's so close by, I'd love to go on the Eurostar one day! What countries have you been to so far? And have you ever gone on a school trip abroad? I was going to do a Germany trip with the school but it was cancelled due to Covid. Some of my friends doing French A-level got to go to France for a week and visit Disney World which seemed fun~ My top countries that I'd like to visit are; Thailand, Japan, China, Armenia and Germany. Yeahh, It's always so sad when customers are rude, especially when the workers are young people. That's truee, the university would be really understanding and flexible! Yeahh, when I went to the accommodation tour on an open day, I thought the Jack and Jill bathroom was really small, especially considering it was supposed to be shared between two people. The bedrooms in Devonshire Hall are really big! And I like the T.V room, it would be perfect for group movie nights! I went to the 5th October open day, it was quite useful to see the area and explore the city centre. I liked the atmosphere of the streets and it felt a lot safer at night than when I went to visit Manchester. I'm going to the March offer holder day too! ^o^ I'm looking forward to knowing more about the course and year abroad. Rightt?! It's such a niche course so really hard to find people. Ahh thank you for the recommendation, I checked out their song and liked it a lot!! They remind me a bit of Wave To Earth since it's very calm and relaxing~☆ What's your favourite song from them? And what music genres do you like to listen to in general? For Thai artists, I listen to Tilly Birds a bit and HYBS even though they sing in English, I also get a lot of Thai songs from different artists recommended by Youtube music 😅 I've been meaning to discover more Thai music so love getting recommended artists~ I've tried so many times to create a routine for learning Thai but coursework and exams always get in the way. I think I've downloaded 10 Thai language apps 😅 That is such a good idea, mocks end next week so I'll start learning the alphabet then! 🌸

That's so true!! Ahh, I'm so excited to go now 😂 So far I've been to Germany, Greece, Corsica, Egypt, and Tunisia! I'd definitely love to travel a lot more, it'd be my dream to get a job where I can travel to lots of different countries! That sounds so fun!! I've never been to Disney World before but I really would love to! What countries have you visited? That's good! Feeling safe is really important, especially since it'll be our first time living independently! I think that's what puts me off London tbh due to how unsafe it can be ☹️ I have a few friends who have had their phones stolen and such so that kind of puts me off going to London, especially with how expensive it is! I know! I'm assuming since it's such a niche course the classes will also be quite small so hopefully it'll be easier to make friends and get closer with others on the course! No way, I love Wave to Earth so much!! Did you go to their concert in London this year? I really wanted to go but tickets sold out so quickly 🥲 For music genres I definitely love more chill artists like wave to earth, laufey, and lamp! I'm also really into Jpop and Kpop artistd! What about you? I'll have a listen to the artists you listen to! Oh wow 😂 I've downloaded one app so far but I'll definitely be downloading more 😅 Do you watch any youtubers in Thailand? I've been watching someone called Joyce Sin and she makes lots of vlogs about her life in Thailand and it's making me so excited for the year abroad!
