Hi @Matadd,

Making friends at university seems a lot harder than it is. I was and still am a shy person overall, but I managed to make some great friends for life whilst being at university. You have nothing to worry about, meeting new people will come naturally and sometimes takes time. A lot of students expect to make new friends just during freshers/welcome week however there are plenty more opportunities later down the line to make more. Have patience with it.

I joined uni Facebook groups relevant to my course and accommodation to get chatting to my course/flat mates which helped a lot. Check out if your university does this as most unis do.

Joining societies is great for meeting likeminded people with similar interests to you so I would also recommend that. 🙂

Lastly, I would say during your time in lectures, suggest going for a coffee break or lunch together with others to get to know them outside the classroom. I am sure you will make some great friends like I did being a shy person. Best of luck!

Hope this helps!

Hi @Matadd

Have you applied for university ? If so which university was you looking at?

At UEA, we have a welcoming and vibrant community with a wide range of societies and sports clubs for students to join. It's a great way to meet new people and make friends. Remember, everyone is in the same boat and might be feeling just as shy and nervous as you. I know I was when I first started university, but by stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new things, I was able to overcome those initial nerves and build lasting friendships.

Living on campus is also an excellent opportunity to meet new people and ease into life away from home. Your flatmates are often the first people you’ll bond with, and during Freshers Week, there are plenty of events designed to help you connect and enjoy university life. It’s definitely something to consider.

I wish you the best of luck, and if you need any more advice or information about university life, feel free to reach out. I've also included some links to our Societies and Sports club, so you can explore what we have to offer.

All the best,
