Will retaking year 12 reduce my chance of getting into dentistry

Hello, I have currently gotten my GCSE grades but I haven't done well enough to pick Bio and Chem at alevel in my chosen sixth form and instead chose Maths, Business, Geography and an EPQ. However I am still willing to try go into the dentistry field and therefore will be retaking my science GCSE's to achieve a better grade and then redo year 12 by picking Bio and Chem. I have been advised that when i redo year 12, i shouldn't pick any subjects that I had previously done, however I really want Maths to be one of my alevels. I would like some advice on what I should do from here.

Some places will look at how long it took you to complete the A-Level, and take this into account when reviewing your application. However, do not let this dismay you. You should ask if you can continue Maths into the second year of its A-Level content while retaking year 12, and see what your sixth form says.

You will definitely be able to get into dentistry but your choices will narrow. And just take maths up again at year 13. But if not it’s not the end of the world, remember that the end goal is dentistry so even if you are unable to do maths you will still end up in the same spot in 3 years.

Thank you for your response, do you think that even if I were to hopefully get outstanding grades in alevels, would the fact that I did three years of alevels be a big factor in whether unis choose to let me in. Furthermore, do you think medicine is highly unlikely in my position?

You will definitely stand a chance for medicine and dentistry. One of my friends got interviews and he sat A-levels over three years and I met a few people in my interviews who did their A-levels over three years. All three years will do is shorten the pool of med or dent schools available to you, but like all other aspiring medical and dental students you will apply to the schools that play to the strengths in your application. So yes it is completely possible

You could also email med schools if their three year criteria applies to you, because for most schools that criteria is there for people who were unable to achieve the grades on their first sitting. You will still sit your subjects over the two years so it would be worth an email if you have a school you really want to go to.
