Should I buy a stethoscope as a Mental Health Nursing student?

Hiii,
I just want to know if it is worth it for me to buy a stethoscope. I'm aware Adult nursing requires you to take manual BPs at times, and I was wondering if it's the same for MH nursing. I start in Sept 2024.

My main concern is that I don't want to risk getting ear infections from using shared earpieces that arent always cleaned so if I will be using them often, I am happy to buy them, but if not, then I'd rather just not waste my money.

If there are any Student MH nurses or Mental Health Nurses that can advise me on if it's worth me getting one, please let me know.

Thank you!

Hi

I would personally buy your own stethoscope because you don't know what's on the ones that you use.

I actually agree with you on catching ear infection from sharing the provided ones.

I bought my own stethoscope as a student veterinary nurse and then when I went onto doing adult nursing I already had my own stethoscope as I just refuse to share the ones that they provide.

A NHS registered adult nurse ( qualified in summer 2023 )

Good luck with your mental health nursing.

Just wondering how much to invest in stereoscope(Approx)?
I have seen many in Eba Amazon selling £4 each while in other website they are £100+ .
I'm confused which one to buy as I neither want to compromise on quality nor spend pointlessly.

Hi suybi

You can spend as much as you like on a stethoscope but remember that sometimes buying cheap ones will mean you will land up buying a better one later on.

Buy something that will do the job you need it for, and invest in something that will last you for a very long time

I bought a littmann stethoscope about 8 years ago and it still works well.

Buy something within your budget.

These ones below are some of the best ones on the market but can be expensive ..
The Littmann stethoscope models recommended for students who are looking for a high-quality, reliable stethoscope are the 3M™ Littmann® Classic III™ Stethoscope, 3M™ Littmann® CORE Digital Stethoscope and the 3M™ Littmann® Cardiology IV™ Stethoscope.

Hi
You are welcome 🤗 🤗

Hope you get the one you want okay and make sure you don't share it with anyone else.

Thank you so much for letting me know, I'll probably get my own then, I do think it is a good investment. I was just wondering if they are also used a lot specifically in MH nursing?

Thank you for your response, I'll keep that in mind. Do you get to practise many clinical skills in MH nursing? I thought that MH nurses had to also take observations on placements. Im just unsure as in starting in September and trying to get a clear picture of all the things I may need to buy before Uni starts.

Yeah on the inpation we did physical observations everyday (BP, pulse, O2, temp ect) but didnt do them manually. But in the community you dont. Our uni only suggested a fob watch really. And i bought a student nurse lanyard for my ID badges, i did buy a name badge but i lost that  but uni didnt suggest any other equipment.
As a mh nurse you generally get 1 clinical placement, and possibly 1 residential home that i did obs at but all electronic not manual, the rest are community placements.
