Can I apply for level 6 apprentichips whilst being an external student at university?

I have an ongoing second academic misconduct case. It was sent to the Committee for a determination of a penalty (I initially denied it but then sent a statement admitting to it). I am in my second year but because of this misconduct case I can’t go into my final year. Instead I’m now an external student for the next academic year. I feel like I’m going to be expelled as my universities policy is that 2nd offences lead to automatic expulsion unless there’s substantial mitigation. I do have mitigating circumstances (I have a caring role for both parents and have been juggling that the entire year and dealing with mental health). I know this doesn’t excuse what I did so I’m expecting expulsion. I was just wondering if I can apply to level 6 (degree) apprenticeships whilst being classed as an external student. Or is it better to drop out of university right now and start applying to those apprenticeships. I don’t think I can do another course as this year has been so demanding on me, it deteriorated my mental health (I had exams every single week from January all the way to June). Plus I heard somewhere that student finance only give you finance for the course you first enrolled onto plus an extra year. I’ve already used up 2 years of funding for my 3 year course. I’m in 2nd year.
