Hello, am i able to do an optometry degree with a level 3 extended diploma in applied science and only that?

The list of approved MOptom degrees is on the following (you need such a degree to become an optometrist):
https://optical.org/en/education-and-cpd/education/what-to-study-and-where/

For the unis that do accept BTEC (only looked at fully approved courses as opposed to provisionally approved courses):
https://www.aston.ac.uk/study/courses/optometry-moptom
Will require at least 1 other A Level

https://www.city.ac.uk/prospective-students/courses/undergraduate/optometry#accordion502079-header2
Will require at least 1 other A Level

https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/moptom-optometry
No further qualifications necessary

https://www.bradford.ac.uk/courses/ug/master-of-optometry/#nav-course-entry
Require 1 other science A Level

https://www.manchester.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/2024/21273/msci-optometry/entry-requirements/#alternative-entry-requirements
Need at least one other A Level

https://www.ulster.ac.uk/courses/202425/optometry-33574#entryconditions
No further qualifications needed

https://www.herts.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/moptom-master-of-optometry
Requires A Level Biology on top

https://courses.hud.ac.uk/full-time/undergraduate/optometry-moptom
Requires at least one other A Level

https://courses.uwe.ac.uk/B511/optometry#entry
No further qualifications required

From the above only 3 unis accept the BTEC without further A Levels

The degrees with foundation year require similar entry requirements (other than the grades) as the degrees without the foundation year i.e. if you need an extra A Level with your BTEC, they will require it in the degree with the foundation year. The only exception is Cardiff uni where they accept your BTEC without further qualifications:

Thank you for all of this. I’ll be checking out what works for me. Again, thanks.

Hi,

I hope you're well. You can apply for the following universities with a BTEC Level 3 Applied Science on its own:
Teesside University, Plymouth University, Ulster University and UWE Bristol. You do need to meet their GCSE requirements though 🙂
