foundation to first year

It’s very early for me to be thinking abt this but I don’t really understand the process of going from a foundation year to the first year. I’m unsure whether i’m gonna stay at my uni or go to another but if I were to stay, can I still apply for accommodation instead of finding accommodation myself as I know many people do that in second year?

Every university will define the rules and regulations via which you progress from one year of a course to the next, be that from the Foundation Year (Year 0) to the first year of the standard degree (Year 1) or between any other two years. The rule is normally a simple one: pass. Pass the modules in one year to progress to the next year.

If you're thinking of switching unis after the foundation year, note that this may not be straightforward. It'd be like completing Year 1 of a standard three-year degree at one university and then deciding you want to do Year 2 and Year 3 elsewhere. It's possible to transfer, but don't casually expect it to be easy to do so.

In terms of accomodation, check with the uni concerned, but generally you'd have guaranteed accomodation when you join (i.e. in the foundation year), but not thereafter. For example, this is what University of Surrey say:

"New* undergraduate students who hold the University of Surrey as their firm choice are guaranteed a place in accommodation, provided they have applied for accommodation by 25 July 2024 and have met their formal academic offer by 22 August 2024.
...
* 'New' refers to students who have not previously studied at the University of Surrey, at any level of study, including on a foundation course."

Also:

"Returning students are those who have previously studied at the University of Surrey at any level of study including foundation courses.
...
Returning students are not guaranteed accommodation."
