Help!! Resit Alevels or do Biomedical Science for Dentistry

Hi, so I recently achieved DCC in my Alevels, D in Biology, C in Chemistry, and a C in English Literature but I still want to do Dentistry. I applied last year but didn’t get any offers despite predicted grades of AAA (my UCAT was low though, 2260). I wanted to know my options at this point. I could either resit my Alevels or go to university and study Biomedical Science at NTU and then hopefully try to get into Dentistry that way. I was wondering if anyone had any advice as I’m not sure which route is better?

Some questions:

1. Why do you think you're actual grades (DCC) were so different from your predicted grades (AAA)? Were those predictions unrealistic in the first place? Did you not really put sufficient effort in? Did something happen during the year which impacted your studies or exam performance?

2. You describe your UCAT score as low. Does that score reflect the best of you? Or have you a genuine reason to suspect that you could move from a "low" score to a "high" score if you retook it?

The faster route would be to retake your A level and secure a place on a dentistry course next year. However, the questions above are trying to establish how likely it is that you would. (Doing a retake year and then still not securing a place would potentially be a wasted year.)

I was always averaging A’s and B’s in biology and it was my favourite subject so I have no idea why it became my lowest grade :/ . As for my other subjects my grades were kind of all over the place with B’s and C’s mainly due to lack of teachers etc, but I did think it was possible to get A’s in both regardless… I think my problem may have been the fact that I did cram my Alevel revision and as for my UCAT I did procrastinate a lot as I underestimated it (not doing daily revision etc)… I just want to know which route is smarter going forward

As well as this, I am confused about the funding if i were to take the Biomed route…

Given that you say you "did cram my Alevel revision", "did procrastinate a lot", and "underestimated it" then it sounds like retaking your A levels and the UCAT might be the better approach.

But this only works if you can quickly break your habbit of procrastination and cramming. So, a little honest reflection is required.

If, in your heart of hearts, you know that you'll just end up procrastinating during a retake year, then your likely better off taking up the Biomedical Science option at NTU.

Sorry, that's an area where my knowledge is quite shakey. I suggest you ask once of the experts from SFE in the Ask Student Finance England forum.
