Can I successfully apply to UCL and Cambridge for medicine with these GCSES?

Hi,

I have 3 9s (rs, eng lit, art)
5 8s (eng lang, bio, chem, computing, history)
2 7s (spanish, physics)
A 6 (in maths), four off a 7- is it worth a remark? I have been told to consider resitting but could it be a waste of time as next year will be very busy.

I am worried about the maths but I believe only two medical unis- East Anglia and Bristol need a 7 in GCSE Maths, however my sixth form requires those who get a 6 to do a maths A level enterance exam. I am now debating between Psychology and Maths as my third A level (the others are Bio and Chem plus an EPQ), and whether I can get an A or A* in Maths, I find both equally interesting but do not wish to take four A levels/ an AS. I know that not doing Maths may limit opportunities at Cambridge for me.

I have a good amount of extracurriculars and volunteering/ work experience but will still need to do some in Year 12.

Thanks a lot for the help.
if ur looking at cambridge def try and resit maths, if u got a 9 in eng lit, then ur pretty smart, esp since even prodigies sometimes get 8 in it, practice and try and get an 8 in maths if not a 9. but still, these are just gcses, ofc they are extremely imp, but u need to get all a* in ur a levels more importantly, so dont be put down and keep trying.

Thanks a lot for the help, another issue I have is that I took further maths gcse and got a U (I partially blame my previous school for this but I have heard it won't be an issue as it is an extra subject and I have 11 other GCSEs), would the U hinder my application? Also do you have any advice for my third A level choice?
Do you think my application would stand a fair chance with good UCAT and a stars at a level without resitting maths?
Thanks so much 😊
UCL doesn't score GCSEs for medicine so it doesn't matter what grades you got, as long as you have passes in English language and maths.

You need a third stem subject (psychology is explicitly stated to not be considered as such) to be competitive for medicine at Cambridge. For any other medical school your third subject doesn't matter.

Yes I do
Did you get the best gcse results in the context of your school? If not then don’t bother to apply to Cambridge.
I don’t think your GCSEs have any advantage for UCL as they claim they don’t look at GCSEs past minimum requirements, but as long as you get a high ucat and all A* predicteds then you have a good chance at UCL
Med school is more than GCSEs. Some people with 5s and 6s get in, while some with all 9s are rejected. UCAT is very important, arguably the thing that decides whether you get in or not. Don’t aim for a specific uni like Cambridge or even UCL as you might get disappointed. Keep your options open. Also there is absolutely no need to be worrying about which uni to go to right now, I’d advise to spend your time in a more useful way like getting ahead in your a levels and doing a few UCAT practice questions. I’d also advise to resit maths as a 6 in core subjects could potentially pose an issue.
Good luck for year 12.

Hi, thanks a lot, unfortunately my teachers were an issue for a lot of my GCSES but it is a grammar school so I will not get contextual.
I looked at uni requirements, talked to some teachers and a med student and I think the 6 meets the requirements for most unis so shouldn't limit me so much, however with unis that have high GCSE requirements, the rest of my GCSES mean that I have a good chance eg Leicester, Birmingham and others.
I am now focusing on A levels and as I want to go to a uni with more research I will have to work hard for a good UCAT and predicted grades,
Thankyou very much for your response

For maths you can ask your schools exams officer to ask for the exam scripts. You maths teacher can then review the exams scripts and identify if there are any extra mark's possible. If so then I think the school will get it remarked. You may have to pay for a remark depending on your schools policy
