I’ve failed two modules quite miserably

You're welcome. Now go to sleep.
Or study for those resits.

Hi, I’m currently suffering from a similar scenario. I’m first year and I’ve failed two modules quite miserably (not by being bad but by being the worst procrastinator ever). All my other modules I’ve passed with high passes (although a few were capped at 40 due to submitting late). At the moment, my average grade is 42% with my 86% and 68% exams doing the heavy lifting, so will I be okay? Or will I need to do a trail credit option with my two 15 credit modules.

Sorry for interrupting this convo, I’ve just noticed you’ve been really helpful in other posts!

If you've failed these two modules "quite miserably", then I assume that means you've achieved less than 30% each, in which case compensation isn't available to you.

Also, you can only trail up to 15 credits at Surrey. :frown:

Is there any chance that you managed to achieve 30% in one or the other of them?

OK. This thread is entitled "Surrey university module fail" and is in the University of Surrey forum. I'll see if I can move your posts into a new thread in the University of Winchester forum, and then we can continue there. (It'll get very confusing otherwise.)
@Tatey03, OK that worked. This is your own thread.

Give me a few minutes to read Winchester's regulations...

Understood, is there anything I need to do?

Only answer a bunch of questions from me.

I agree that you can trail the two failed 15-credit modules as D2.1 (in Academic Regulations of Taught Programmes 2024/5) says, "Students who have failed one or more modules and are ineligible to continue to the next academic year may Trail Credits up to a maximum of 30 credits each academic year."

If you were just checking that you could trail these two modules, then consider that checked (the marks are capped, by the way, but I assume you know that).

If you were trying to establish whether compensation could be applied, then the rules in Section E5 of Assessment Regulations 2024-25 suggest that you can't. That's because E5.5 says (abbreviated by me), "...will be able to compensate module failure once at each level of a programme ... up to a maximum of 30 credits provided the following requirements are met: a. no more than one mandatory or optional module worth up to 30 credits has been failed at the level;"

You have two modules you're looking to compensate. The way the rules are written, they'll compensate a single 30-credit module, but not two 15-credit modules. :frown:

Also, can I just check that you're not in a Foundation Year? (Those can't be compensated anyway.)

I’m first year 🙂 so does that mean they can compensate one as my overall grade is still over 40%? Ik some universities can only compensate if it’s within 10% of a pass right?

Also, does the two capped modules that I WILL pass next year affect my year 2 grade or does it just class my year 1 as successfully progressed.

In my original reply I asked if they would compensate one module and trail the other module? Even if it was below 30%? Pretty sure Winchester says the module has to be within 10 marks of a pass to be compensated

You must obtain at least least 30% for compensation to apply. So if one of your modules is above 30% it should be eligible for compensation. No such requirement applies to trailed credits. So you could, in theory, have one module compensated and trail the other one.

The capping will not impact your Year 2 mark and will therefore not impact the calculation of your degree classification.

Okay I think that’s everything I need to ask? I guess I’m lucky I did so well in other modules to keep it above an overall pass 😂 thank you for the help 🙏 has put me at ease.
