so school is in 3 days 🫨 i could've sworn we used to get 2 teacher training days, but we move~
here's my update for the past few days! after doing so much around london, i'm back home 🙂 i must say, i felt really locked in the past few days too! my mind feels surprisingly clear and i feel at peace. i also missed my desk and my comfy chair at home.
i got through some extra things on my to-do list this week (e.g training, study) but my anki backlog is waiting for me 😛 i'll give you guys an update for today when the day is over ^^

Original post by fesselnd
@Yinbeemie @registered-pleas anki looks really complicated at first, like a big beast to tackle, and i'm 100% not an expert 😛 but the way i use it is

get out my spec (e.g Y13 Chemistry

make a deck (i do this all on mac, way easier than mobile)

NOTE: you can find premade decks on https://ankiweb.net/shared/decks. some are quite useful, depending on what you're doing

so the deck i made will be a big one covering a topic. e.g 17: Thermodynamics (a topic in Y13)

now i've made it, i don't add anything! i click 'add deck' and make smaller sub-topics (e.g 17.1 Enthalpy Changes, 17.2 Born-Haber cycle)

i drag these decks onto my big Thermodynamics topic subdeck. now when you open anki the topic deck will have a plus sign next to it, because it's expandable

unless you pre-study and make flashcards, i leave it now.

when you start the year and your lessons, i convert my notes into flashcards (sciences). turn your notes into questions and answers. you can also make keyword flashcards with definitions.

EXAMPLE: (question and answer - chem)

front: which catalysts are used in a catalytic converter?

back: rhodium, palladium

EXAMPLE: (keyword - chem)

front: enthalpy change

back: heat change under constant pressure

there are different cards you can pick when you create a flashcard, like 'basic' 'front and back reversed' 'cloze' 'basic - type in the answer'. you can pick whichever you feel is right for your card and your information. i don't touch the crazy ones about audio because apparently it's a bit complicated.
for a language, i'd 100% recommend 'basic - type in the answer' when you do english on the front and german on the back (typed), for example. it helped me recall german words so fast when doing speaking sessions and exams. 'type in the answer' is bae.
i'd also recommend 'cloze' for long definitions in science, where you have to recall what's in the hidden part. i do this for 3 mark long definitions, such as 'first electron enthalpy', where typing in the answer takes a long time and is too difficult. for cloze, click the Type button after you click 'Add Card' to your deck. then type something like Catalytic Converter, for example. highlight it with your mouse, pointer thing.
now you click the icon on the top with this icon [...]. now on your card your text should look like this
{{c1: Catalytic Converter}}.
this means that it's the first cloze in your card. if you want to continue adding separate clozes that will be hidden at different times, click the [...+] button after highlighting new text and a {{c2: xyz blabla}} will now come up on your card.
now you have two separate clozes. example:

{{c1: Catalytic converters}} remove {{c2:nitrogen oxide}}.

First cloze when it comes up: ... remove nitrogen oxide.

2nd cloze: Catalytic converters remove ... .

yeah, that's basically it for cloze. i'd recommend it as well.
and hey, i hope this was remotely useful and didn't look like a bunch of yap 😟 if you have any more questions, you can give me or one of the other lovely people in this thread a shout (anki is weird sometimes, so you might have a lot).
sometimes reddit or a thread on https://forums.ankiweb.net/ can answer questions well and accessibly, too.
happy studying!

hey, what's up? i really enjoyed AS german 💗 i studied 'Good Bye Lenin!' for my movie. i love the film so much, it was entertaining and i learned so much ^^ i saw you studied Das Leben der Anderen, what's it about? (i heard it's about the Stasi). and BEST OF LUCK for this year <333 what other subjects are you studying?

It's great to hear that you enjoyed german too!!

Das Leben der Anderen was about the life of artists in east Germany and how they were under the constant surveillance of the Stasi. It was really interesting to learn about the historical context of the film!

Thank you! I'm studying bio, chem and maths.

twin! i'm also studying bio, chem and maths 😛
what do you want to do in the future? will you do anything tied to german? i heard that german unis consider you for application to german-speaking courses if you have an AS as proof of proficiency, but i'm not sure if that info is correct 🫣

tomorrow is the first day of school 😛 i've done quite a lot of work today! some bio and chem mostly. i realised that 50min sessions are my sweet spot in terms of focus. 60 minutes is too much 😵*💫
here's a to-do list for tomorrow!

start writing up PS on UCAS (50min)

speak to chem teacher

finish last bit of training for job (allocating 75min)

get through anki backlog (10min)

hoover room (5min)

it's a little lighter, since i want to settle into school and not stress too much. on another note, the library at my school will be open again! i want to log some sessions in there for sure.

happy studying,

fesselnd

the life of a y13~
it's the first week back! the old y13s have left and a new batch of y12s have appeared 😵*💫 the 6th form cohort is very different now ^^
after settling in for the first few days, i'm back! my first day at school was absolutely perfect 💗 i saw a lot of friends again and i started up class! i'm beginning to love biology, learning about the mechanisms of photosynthesis and the reflex arc is so very interesting 🫶 i feel very optimistic abt y13.
i got my timetable yesterday and they cut off a lot of our free periods though 🫨 i gotta lock in and pay attention in class, as well as utilise the few remaining ones i have wisely.
also, GREAT NEWS! after a review, one of my grades went from a C to a B! now i'm predicted ABB!! i'm so grateful fr, but i still gotta surpass that in the real exams in may.
so i managed to tick off everything but one task on my to-do list from earlier this week, apart from completing my training. here's a to-do list for this evening (i'm a little sleepy so it'll be short):

finish other half of work training

review photosynthesis notes done today (about electron excitement and chlorophyll.. photosystems.. 😵*💫)

do half of an exercise from the maths textbook

whether you're starting y13, uni, y12 or any other school year, i hope you have fun, have confidence and enjoy the process 🫶 good luck!

lots of love,

fesselnd

fesselnd's guide on rescuscitating your life
new blog, who dis?
after staggering off a rollercoaster called y12, i took a few weeks to hibernate before considering starting a new gyg.. for 2025 😟 (time flies)
although my singular AS result in a 4th subject (that i dropped ✌️) came out well, my predicted grades are looking… a bit dead.
predicted grades:

Spoiler

i could just bury them and surrender but for the sake of reaching degree level, I will spar with biology and my Public Enemy #1, chemistry, for a whole year 😇.
with a little magic, inspiration and by channeling the spirit of the scientist in Frankenstein, we can drag maths, biology and chemistry out of the grave to make them undergo a divine transformation (think of the MC of the kdrama and webtoon True Beauty).
final grades (dream):

Spoiler

magic, right?
tools:

the forest app: my saviour 🙏

my notion board 🤞

a calendar.. i need to implement a calendar into my board

screen time blocking. someone on here mentioned opal once and i’d recommend the free version for work sessions. screenzen on the mac and app stores is good too. stayfocusd on the chrome web store is very strict and stops me procrastinating, most of the time.

a little more discipline

my textbooks 😛

anki, I love you forever.

PhysicsAndMathsTutor.. i need to use this more. my weakness is using past papers less than flashcards and it shows through sometimes..

watch this space

about me:

y13 (yeah.. time flies)

will apply to medicine, sometime in the future

gcses: 999988887777

likes to read (books, webtoons 😛 sometimes an article or two), study new languages, listen to music (live off rnb and some other genres), writing sometimes

learning german, will maybe pick up french again sometime

listening to too many artists

infp? enfp?

if you wanna get into ennea then i’m a 7w6

prone to phone addiction 😕

think I learned more this year than the rest of my life

can’t think of any more, maybe i'll add bits later

anyways
if anyone who stumbles on this post has forest and wants to plant together, hmu. if you have questions, hmu. otherwise, enjoy the rest of your day 🤞

Hey, this is quite useful as I’m in yr12 rn. What textbooks did you se for your A-levels, i noticed you said that they were part of your tools and i am quite confused on what i need to buy and use. I also don’t really know how to use Notion and want to use it more frequently, so any tips on that?
It’s a great blog btw!

fr i was shocked 😳 (shik shak shockkkk) they added a bunch of 'directed study' sessions into our timetables.. it's where we stay in the library for a full period to do teacher-set work. oh wellll
why did you get extras 😭 you lucky fr
