How much do personal statements matter?

I am reapplying to uni this year, on my gap year. I just completed A Levels this year and got A*A*A*, so grades wonโ€™t be a problem getting into uni, where iโ€™m applying for a history or a history/politics course.
The thing is, my PS is really bad lol. Iโ€™m planning on just reusing the one from last year when I applied and just editing it up a bit but every time I read it i just cringe cause itโ€™s awful, and I donโ€™t really have anyone to help me/ look over it as iโ€™m not in college anymore and theyโ€™re not willing to help.
The question iโ€™m asking is do universities, especially russel group/ high ranking ones, really care about personal statements if you have good grades and references?
Someone needs to fact check me here but I'm not so sure it's a good idea to reuse your personal statement as it could trigger the plagiarism detection software from when you submitted it last year, so your application would be rejected...

That's so annoying that your college aren't willing to help... perhaps you could contact some teachers from secondary school to see if they would proof it?

There's also lots of support videos online which might help with the structure ect?

I hope this helps x

thank youuu, iโ€™ve checked about that and UCAS says you can reuse it as theyโ€™ll check your name on your application if itโ€™s flagged up for plagiarism!
yeah itโ€™s so annoying ๐Ÿ˜ญ but iโ€™ll have to just get other people to check it over and stuff

Yeah you can use the same personal statement but obv if youโ€™ve been rejected previously may be a good idea to improve it!
Basically when you resign up to ucas you get a diff student number but their system flags you up so they replace the new number with your previous one and that prevents your personal statement flagging up as plagiarism x

The PS isn't that important but it does play a role in admissions so you don't want to screw it up. If you're reapplying to some of the universities you already applied to, they might still have your old personal statement on file and it will come accross as extremely lazy to use your old personal statement without a single change.

We have here on TSR a personal statement review team that can check out your personal statement if you so wish. Here's the link: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4237154
