Edexcel english literature a level coursework panic

Im am comparing the great gatsby to the picture of dorian gray but i am terrified about this coursework. I have so much anxiety surrounding it because the teachers have given zero guidance on what or how to structure it or write about. I thought it would be like a normal comparison essay but i read an examplar that got 60 marks and it was crazy insane. I really need to do well im panicking can anyone help please? Give any advice on it?

Hi bloppbloopbloop. For a start, don't panic! Basically, the NEA is an opportunity for you to take control and shine. You've chosen two really interesting texts, so do you have ideas as to the theme/area you want to write about? If you've already read an exemplar, then I'm guessing you've visited the Edexcel website. Pursue it a bit further, and you'll find further materials to help you with structuring your coursework. Remember, too, that the AOs that apply to the NEA are pretty common to all exam boards, so it would benefit you to have a look at guidance and examples on other Board sites (AQA, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas). It's also useful to read the Examiners' Reports about that unit. They can be quite helpful in pointing you in the right direction for your own studies. If you really have no clue about the NEA, post again, and I'll have another think.

Thank you very much for your advice. I was thinking on doing it on something to do with the upper class and moral decay as well as narcissism as a quality shared between the gray and gatsby. Im just really stuck on starting it because i have no idea how to approach it.😣

Hi again. I’ve just seen this. Will get back to you with further thoughts asap. In the meantime, I would suggest that you try to narrow the scope of your area of interest, and work towards a tighter statement on which to build your coursework. For example, does affluence automatically equate with moral decay? How does Myrtle (GG) figure in those terms?

Don't panick you'll make it, you're looking into it early on and clearly you have the right mindset so you'll make it!
The examplars that are top grades are just a model from a very very good essay, don't worry if yours are not like that. You will get there by practicing regularly essay writing, do it every week and underdtand exactly what you do wrong and what to improve and eventually you'll get it!

in terms of structure, start with this:

Introduction: Introduce both novels, their authors, and your thesis on how each explores themes of deceit and superficiality.

Comparative Analysis: Discuss key themes, character parallels, and how both authors use setting and symbolism to convey their messages.

Critical Perspective: Analyze the authors' critiques of society, supported by specific examples and quotations from both texts.

Conclusion: Summarize your findings, restate your thesis, and reflect on the broader implications of both novels' portrayals of morality and pretense

If you can afford it, Tilf website is perfect for essay as it gives you the mark and feedback on what to do to improve. Teachers themselves are using it to automate their own marking so it's basically as good as an examiner.
