Can you get into a top uni with these GCSEs if you do well at A-level?

I got 88887777766 and I’m hoping to get three of them remarked and hopefully go to 88888877776 as I was a couple marks off. I know these aren’t bad grades but I didn’t take them seriously and could’ve done much better.

What I’m asking is, for instance, if I built up a great personal statement, did really well on the entrance exam and got strong A-levels. How much would these grades at GCSE hinder my application? Should I lower goals and attempt to get into a less competitive uni? Or does it not matter once you’ve started A-levels?

Hi these grades are really good well done! I don’t see how they could hinder your uni application in any way. If you are applying to a competitive uni or course you may need to check if they have any subject specific requirements.
Yes, you can get into "top" universities with excellent GCSEs such as yours if you do well in A-levels. You could also do it with worse GCSEs than yours. 4 A*, 5 As and 2 Bs at GCSE is a very good outcome.

Not to mention most universities and courses don't care about your GCSEs anyway provided you've passed English language and maths.
