alevel english lit or english lang? pls help

for alevels i chose english language because that’s what i think i’ll prefer and i believe if i do literature i’ll find it really hard due to stuff like remembering quotes, context, etc.

surprisingly for gcses, i got an 8 in lit and a 7 in language, which i wasn’t expecting since im usually better in language (however i was 1 mark away from an 8 in language lol) but now im wondering what is a better subject to do to get into universities? i’m not trying to enter a russel group university so does it truly matter if i do language instead of lit because lit is more recognized in universities?

i’m most likely going to do law in uni so will me doing english language alevel affect my chances of getting in and should i change to literature?

i think lit is a lot more respected as it is considered to be ‘traditional’, but i did it and i agree that it is a lot of hard work in terms of memorising context and so many quotes. Only do it if you think you can get the necessary grade in order to apply to russel groups, if you hate it then it could drag you down. I would specifically look at the grade boundaries for the board that your sixth form uses as i’ve heard OCR has ridiculous grade boundaries of like 94% for an A*. I did AQA which was around 85% for an A* so it was manageable. I’d research the books that the sixth form does to see if you like the sound of them. I did like 9 books and loved 8/9 of them so that helped me achieve the A* in the end!!! If you do pick english lit then understand it is a slow burner- i started on Ds then slowly progressed to an A during yr 12, then a* in yr 13. I’d also check if your course has coursework included (it is called NEA officially, for non-exam assessments) as this was well-suited to me and secured me a good amount of marks.

Does your school have an option of an english lang & lit combined course? This could be a good option for you. I can’t make any comparisons with english lang because i didn’t do it, but i heard this course is good.

I think it also depends on what you other two subjects are. If the other two are ‘preferred’ subjects then having english lang as a third may not be an issue. I’d look on the websites of any unis you’re considering and try to see, then potentially email their admissions officer. Hope this helps!!!

it could be useful to read into the fact that you got an 8 in lit and a 7 in lang. It could suggest that you are more suited to a lit course, but wouldn’t rely on this completely!!! I actually got the same grades (8 in lit then 7 in lang- one mark off an 8 but i wasn’t allowed to remark it) then it went up to a 9 in lit. For me this indicated that I was better at it naturally but, as I said, don’t use that as the guiding factor in your decision!!! They’re both so subjective so a slightly lower grade in one doesn’t indicate you’re necessarily worse at it, nor how you would do at a higher level of education as the subjects change quite a lot.

thank you so much!! 🩷🩷 i’ll definitely research unis and grade boundaries to make sure i choose the best choice for me! i believe my school does ocr lit so hopefully if i change the grade boundaries aren’t as harsh*

Is the combined english language and literature an option for you? Also i don't know if it's the same for all exam boards but on mine english lit and english lang&lit are open book exams so there's less pressure to remember quotes

wait this is a really good point i completely forgot that😭 also bear in mine with the lang&lit course, there tends to be fewer books too. i think they did 5 (one of them being coursework?) and the lit people did 8 (2 of them being coursework). one in two of my lit papers were also open book but i’d research for you exam board!!
