How strict is Edinburgh on GCSE requirements?

I was looking at their Law and Business course and saw that their requirements for A levels are A*AA, and for GCSE they want at least a 6 in Maths and English language. Unfortunately, I did not meet the Math requirement; I got a 5 despite getting 9’s and 8’s in English. My A level choices will be English literature (9 at GCSE), Business studies (8 at GCSE), and Politics. Do you think, assuming I performed well and met the entry requirements, my application would still be considered? Honest answers appreciated 😔

I don't know Edinburgh's policy specifically, but as a general rule GCSE requirements are strictly enforced and are not negotiable. Sorry. :frown:

(Have you considered retaking GCSE Maths?)

i think you should contact the admissions email it should be somewhere on the website!! each course has different acceptance rates and leniency. I applied for PPE with 4a* predictions and 9999999887 at GCSE and got a straight rejection, then they told me my course had a 5% acceptance rate (I didn’t know this when I applied).

They seem to be doing more contextual offers so maybe look into whether you are eligible for those as that could help your chances? Your best bet might be just resitting Maths as I assume you are just finishing year 11 and could do so in November time?

I am on a gap year now but got a 9 at gcse maths then an A* at A level. I wouldn’t mind tutoring you so let me know if you would be interested!!! I’ve been wanting to for a while but haven’t had a chance to find tutees.

Applying without specified GCSE grades for Maths and English is the quickest way to get an immediate rejection. Maths is required for the Business element of the degree - its about basic skills, not 'nice to have'.

Talk to your school about resitting this GCSE alongside your A levels etc - it wont disadvantage your application to Edinburgh or any other Uni.
