How to be smarter if you are naturally dumb?

Hey guys!
Recently I got into a foundation year medicine course.
I am just wondering now if I am too stupid for it.
Okay let’s get into the meat and potatoes of this.
My offer was (BBC) I actually panicked about this. Something that the average medical school applicant could easily breeze through.
I received ABB at Alevels
GCSES were 998876665
UCAT was 2200 something
So yes I can work hard and achieve okay ish grades but how about operating as a doctor when I don’t have the natural aptitude to identify patterns, quickly verbally reason etc.
This is something that has been bugging me for a while. Like how can I recuperate something that I am born with. Like have you guys ever heard of someone increasing their iq? I want to aspire to be the best surgeon I can be. That is so damn hard when it is emphasised to me that in this field, I am on the lower side of the bell curve. Let’s be real am I even on that bell curve?!?

Sounds like you have a case of the ol' impostor syndrome. We all get it from time-to-time, I get it every time I start a new job and I'll bet that literally everyone else on your course is feeling similar to you now. Fact is you got the spot on the course so you are smart enough to be there. And with plenty of work and learning over the years I'm sure you'll make a great surgeon.

Rather than wondering how you can fit a square peg through a round hole, play to your strengths. You are not dumb but no doubt others are better at some things that you are but no doubt you excel in your own skill set. The trick is to figure out what that skill set is and exploit that. If you are not a pattern matcher and verbal reasoner, that is ok. I am not a premiership football player or virtuoso pianist. It might be that being a doctor isn't for you, but there are lots of other professions that still involve helping others. Why not investigate them? Will you really be happy in a field where you feel inferior to your peers?

Either that or go for it and stop worrying about everyone else.
