Sporty university

Hi all, I’m quite a sporty person I do; triathlons, swimming, running, horse riding, tennis and hiking and whilst I’m in the midst of looking for a university these are really important things in my life so I’d like to find a university that has good facilities sporty and artsy. I’m open to all ideas however I’m still unsure of what degree I want to do so please could you tell me what university’s offer some of these? 😊

Hi there!

At Edge Hill, we have some great sports facilities. We have a sports centre which includes a full gym with affordable student plans, exercise classes, a swimming pool and sports hall that can be hired out for activities such as football and badminton and a running track. We have so many sports which you can join competitively or casual for enjoyment. We also take part in a varsity competition with UCLAN which always has a great atmosphere.

We also have a great arts department which includes two theatres which regularly show screenings and have performances. We also have a great musical theatre society and drama group.

In terms of degrees, we have a variety of subjects in the sports department such as sports therapy and exercise science. Would this be the kind of degree you would be interested in?

Overall there are so many options in both sports and the arts!😄

Loughborough is probably most famous for its sporting elements, and also is reasonably well known for its creative arts courses besides, so may be worth exploring. That said I believe a lot of the athletes there are not just "sporty" but in fact national/international level elite athletes. I assume there is some sport available pitched at a slightly lower level of ability/commitment but that is potentially a factor to consider.

Other unis that are regarded as relatively "sporty" and tend to do well in BUCS include Durham, Exeter, Nottingham and Bath.

Hey there,
It is awesome to hear that you are so active and passionate about sports! Being involved in sports at university is a great way to make new friends, manage stress and stay healthy.

Here at the University of Southampton, we have great sports facilities, and an amazing sports centre - The Jubilee Sport and Recreation Centre. You can find more information about it here. It has a large gym, swimming pool, fitness suites, sport halls, squash courts, a martial arts studio and much more! The sports centre is also currently undergoing an extension project which will include a new large gym (with 200 exercise stations), a climbing and bouldering wall, etc.

Personally, I used to go to the sports centre almost every other day. Sometimes for a gym session and other times to play badminton with my friends or go for a swim. It is the perfect place for all sporty things.

There are also many sports related student clubs and societies. You can view the entire list and get more information about them here. I went to kickboxing sessions during the first year, and they were so fun! They have weekly sessions for people at different levels, so it's so easy to jump in whether you are a beginner or more advanced.

In terms of arts, from poetry to dance, there is something for everyone! The Winchester School of Art (which is a part of the university) offers so many creative courses and has fantastic studios and resources for students. Even if you are not studying art, you can get involved in the various arts related clubs and societies. You can find more about the art facilities at the university here. There are also many courses that mix arts with other fields, like BA Music and Business Management, which you can explore at the Course finder.

If you are exploring and thinking about what degree you want to pursue - it'll be a great idea to have a look at the wide range of course options provided by the University of Southampton here. I'm sure you'll find an amazing course that suits your interests and aspirations.

I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any questions!

All the best,
Akshita

Bath and Loughborough are Team GB training centres and consequently have top sports facilities.
Birmingham has benefitted from facilities etc built for the Commonwealth Games.
