Another academic year passes which means another thread for Cardiff's 2025 entry! This thread is to chat to others looking to apply and ask questions about applying to Cardiff University.
To get things started, here's a few questions for us to get to know you:
> What course are you thinking of applying to? > What are you looking most forward to about university?
As usual, our student reps will be monitoring this chat, ready to answer any questions you have.
Hi, I want to apply for Law at Cardiff. However, the entry requirement is AAA, while I'm predicted A*AB. I was wondering if it's worth applying, as Cardiff doesn't consider UCAS points and therefore won't consider A*B as equal to AA, so I'm technically below the entry requirement.

Hi!
As a Student Rep, I'm unfortunately unable to speculate whether or not its worth applying, but I recommend you ask our admissions team - they may be able to provide some guidance You can contact them on this page here.
Hi, I am starting my first year at Cardiff doing Psychology. I was looking for more information on the reading lists - will all books be easily available at the library, as I imagine there will be a high demand? Is it worth starting readings before the course begins as well, to be prepared? How much time should we set aside each week for reading? Thank you 😁

Hiya,
That's awesome to hear, I'm a psychology student going into my final year! So all the books on the reading lists, you will have online access to in Cardiff's library system, LibrarySearch. But if you prefer to read on paper, there are also books available physically in the libraries. I prefer to read from the physical textbook and I found that I've never really had any issues with accessing physical copies myself
Honestly, I wouldn't say its worth too much to prepare in first year! The first semester especially is only pass/fail. The course really starts from basics so its not too challenging.
In terms of how much time you should set aside for reading, I would say as long as it takes Each lecture often refers to a specific chapter/article to guide your extra reading. I've heard some people say that its worth spending the same or double amount of time on reading, as its related lecture. So for example, if a lecture was 1hr, you'd spend 1-2hrs on reading. It usually takes me this long to get through readings myself, if that helps guide your studies!
I hope thats helped, let me know if you had any other questions about the course!

Hi, is it worth keeping our A level Psychology notes? Will we need them for the Psychology course?
Also, as most of the work is digital is it worth buying folders, notebooks etc? Or do most people study from their laptop? Thank you 🙂

Hiya!
Honestly, I would say that its not essential, but can be helpful! Since the course also caters to people who have never studied psychology before, its not needed. But personally, I found my notes on research methods from the Psychology A Level most helpful 🙂 But that being said, I only really used it in first year and never needed it after that.
In terms of laptop vs paper, its all up to you! Yes, most people do use laptops, but I had a friend who did all their notes on paper first year to final year. Its honestly depends on your own preferences and how you'd like to study.

Hi there,
Amy here, also a Psychology student at Cardiff Uni! Having graduated from BSc Psychology with Professional Placement course in July, and being a current MSc Children's Psychological Disorders student (also at Cardiff!), I never really used my A Level Psychology notes. As Fatiha mentioned, although it can be useful, the Psychology lecturers at Cardiff are really aware that not everyone studies Psychology at A Level, therefore they explain many basic concepts from scratch! However, if you think they will help you during first year, there is definitely no problem with using them!
In terms of note-taking, I only ever used my laptop to take notes. From personal experience, I have found this to be the easiest way to learn, just because there are a lot of digital components to a Psychology degree, such as statistics. Also, all coursework is submitted online, so having typed-up notes can be super handy when making essay plans etc. However, again, everyone learns differently so just do whatever feels right to you!
Do you have any more questions about studying Psychology at university? 🥰
I have sent off my application for architecture (around a month ago) but I haven't been asked for my portfolio. I have logged in to the e-portal that I was given when I applied and discovered that there is a place to upload my portfolio - do I have to wait for the admissions to ask for my portfolio or should I just upload a portfolio now (before I receive an email asking for one)?

Hi!
If the course hasn't communicated to you that you need to upload a portfolio, then the likelihood is that you probably won't need to. Some students are asked to submit a portfolio whilst others aren't, depending on your study background (From the course page: If you do not have a background in an art and design subject, we may ask you to submit a portfolio alongside your application.)
It never hurts to double check though! I recommend contacting the School to double check, in case of some admin error. Do you have their email, or would you like me to pass it on for you?
There is a undergraduate webinar coming up soon on the 23rd of Jan, 17:00-18:00 - talking about how to make the most out of UCAS events! If you're interested here's the link to sign up to this and other upcoming events and undergraduate webinars!

Hi! I’ve applied for journalism at Cardiff but noticed uni owned accommodation is far from the JOMEC building. Are there any recommendations for external accommodation or alternatives?

Hi there!
I recommend having a look at Adam Street Gardens or Ty Pont Haearn. These are owned by Unite Students, but the university rents out some rooms from them - you can find them on the list of accommodations that the uni offers. Ty Pont Haearn is probably the closest to you, being a 13 minute walk away. Adam Street Gardens is a 20 minute walk away.
There are other privately owned student halls, such as Lumis or Zenith (which is at a similar location to Ty Pont Haearn), or places like Howard Gardens, West Wing, Eclipse. So there's quite a lot of places!
This may seem like a rather random question but does anybody that does business management at Cardiff University have a 5 in GCSE maths. Would really appreciate it if a student could answer my question.

Hiya!
Hopefully a business management student sees this post, but if not, I've got a place you can check out to help you with your answer!
Associated with the Student Union, there is a Business School Society, which I believe includes Business Management students as well. Its worth sending them a message and asking them, as I'd imagine they'd know quite a few Business students.
