I'm interested to obtain a career in Optometry

Hello
Currently, I will be doing BTEC Foundation Applied Science in this coming September, I worried that BTEC Would not be suitable unless it's done alongside with A-levels. I haven't achieved a high grades at my GCSE'S and my college is not letting me to resit Maths and Science alongside with Applied Science but I want to get a higher grades so that i can easily access to my chosen career, So I was thinking to do a evening course at different college to study maths and science and do an A-level course next year. Will this be appropriate for me to study at different institutions? even though the time is manageable for me because according to my timetable because my college finishes at 2:30 and i do have Monday and Tuesday off. Please anyone help me.

Hi Musfi,

I hope you are well. The only universities that accept a BTEC Level 3 Applied Science on its own is Teesside, UWE Bristol and Plymouth. The rest of the universities that offer optometry in England would require an A-level with it. The one you have chosen unfortunately is not accepted at any of the universities. You would also need at least a 5/B in mathematics, 4/C is English and a 5/5 in your science. You can look into redoing the GCSE's again externally as a private candidate (usually costs £300-500 for each GCSE) of the ones you did not achieve the grade for entry into optometry and you can also look into changing your BTEC course to study the one that is eligible into the optometry course. If you want to have a tutor / teacher, you could consider enrolling into a private sixth form alongside this and see if it works around your current timetable to redo the GCSE's you did not achieve. If this is too much, you can finish your BTEC course and then take a year out to resit your GCSE's too if that is an option. I hope this helps and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask 🙂
