pls help a very stressed student - uni courses

I'm just starting y13 so I have to start applying to university soon. But I'm so lost about what to do/where to go. I would love to do English Literature, as English has always been my favourite school subject. However, I have been considering doing it as a joint course with Film studies. I've never studied film, but I did media for a while at the beginning of a levels before dropping it as it was my fourth subject. From experience so far they link/ join quite well?
I was really just wondering what people's experience has been doing a joint course, especially with english lit and / or film studies. Is it easier just doing one subject????
I haven't been looking at any specific uni's at the moment apart from Glasgow, so any comments/advice about experiences at Glasgow studying anything but especially English Lit would also be helpful.
Any advice or help on this would be so appreciated! xoxo a confused and stressed teenage girl

Hi,
Thanks for your question and it’s great to hear that you are interested in studying here at UofG! My flatmate during my undergrad at UofG did a joint degree with English Lit and Film and she really enjoyed it, and it is a common pairing! Doing a joint degree is no more work than doing a single honors degree, as you do the same number of credits- they are just split between 2 subjects instead of all in 1 subject, and you only do 1 dissertation in 4th year (you get to pick if you want to do it in Film of English Lit). Also, at UofG we do something called a "flexible degree structure", meaning that in 1st /2nd year you take 3 subjects (if you apply for a joint degree, 2/3 of these subjects will be Film and English Lit). Then when you get to Honors (3rd/4th year) you can then choose to stick with your joint degree or drop one of the subjects and do a single honors degree. This also means that if you apply with a single degree, you can also choose to take on one of the subjects you studied in 1st/2nd year to make your degree a joint degree (this could be Film or even another subject). So lots of flexibility and options if you are unsure when you are starting out.
Hope this helps!

Hi there,

I know how you feel, it can feel overwhelming to begin with knowing where to start. Im a student at cardiff and love it, (so much im doing masters now). From people ive spoken to, and friends we have a good English Lit and Media department. You can do them individually, or yeah look at joint honours, we offer a Journalism, Media and English Literature joint honours course, which you can check out here: (https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/course/journalism-media-and-english-literature-ba)
I know you said film studies, but if you are not sure (i wasn't either) on course it can sometimes be good to keep it open, and then within your course specialise more within your module choices, and you often get some freedom in essays and reports you write, where you can draw upon more things you are interested in.
In terms of doing a joint honours, it can sometimes be a little bit harder (in terms of work load) but you also often get the benefits that both schools offer, when they have events and the services/facilities they offer.
I might be bias, but i definitely would consider Cardiff, I love it and always highly recommend it to people, the uni is such a nice area and great city to be a student in, the students union is so good and so much to offer.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions,

Good afternoon @raisinbagel12

It sounds like you have a tough decision; when deciding your course, you should always follow a pathway you know you will love. It sounds like you are passionate about English literature, and joining it with the film will open up more career paths.

Doing a joint degree is a great way to specialise in different areas, I am currently studying BSc Ecology and Wildlife Conservation, which has provided a broad curriculum for me to learn. As long as you are willing to put the time and effort into your studies, you can achieve anything you want to.

The University of Reading has a great film department that provides multiple joint courses, including English literature and film! There is also another option, which includes English lit, film and theatre, which is a very broad degree.

You can access the course webpage here for English lit and film. A typical offer is BBB, including a grade B in A-level English Literature or a related subject. Related subjects include English Language and Literature, English Language, Drama and Theatre Studies, and Creative Writing.

At Reading, there are two semesters per academic year. Throughout the year, you need to have 120 credits. Each module is worth 20 credits, so you must complete six. Ideally, you will have 3 modules per semester, but the modules don't always work out like this. It depends on when the optional modules are taught.

The film department is based in the Minghella Studios on the whiteknights campus; these are state-of-the-art facilities. It includes 3 theatre spaces, a cinema auditorium, and lots more, which you can see here. Additionally, there has been a recent film studio built about 20 minutes from the university, where students will be able to take on courses and work placements( these are not guaranteed), this can be seen via this link.

The English literature studies are set all around the Whiteknights campus, and you can have a look at the details here. There is a great team of lecturers within both disciplines you are looking to study who will be able to support you if you choose Reading University.

I hope this information helps. If you have any questions, please let us know.

All the best,
Ella
