Am i an independent student if my aunt is my legal guardian

Hi! I’ve lived with my aunt since i was very young and am starting uni this year. I applied to student finance but only to be means tested since i want to be considered for specific bursaries at my university. once i filled the application i was asked to provide proof for estrangement and i also realised i had to change my application to be means tested. I have proof of my aunt being my legal guardian but am unsure if this counts as estrangement. I still speak to my parents but my aunt would be supporting me financially. Also would my aunt be the one to provide her finance details for me to be means tested? The whole application is a little confusing to me. I also don’t have a third party to fill out the estrangement form

Hi there,

If you have contact with your parents this means you're not estranged. Do you have paperwork confirming your aunt is your legal guardian?

Thanks,
Claire

You can send the evidence of the guardianship with a detailed covering letter from yourself, explaining why you're sending it. You can upload this online in your account under the evidence upload option. This link shows you how here https://youtu.be/rOMx_EG5JWk

The team will then contact you if they need anything else.

Thanks,
Claire

sorry would i upload this evidence where they’ve asked me to prove my estrangement or elsewhere
Hi there. We would not require her income details only this evidence. Yes, you can upload this under any section of the digital upload screen online. Thanks , David

Hi there,

We would require the evidence that Claire advised of. Your Legal Guardian can't be a sponsor so all we'd need is the evidence of guardianship and a cover letter from yourself.

Thanks,
Ross
