Student finance for new course after withdrawal

Hello, so I studied 2 years at a university( 2022 - 2024), and this august I have submitted my withdrawal form. But the university has not confirmed the withdrawal yet. In the meantime, I applied at for a new course (nursing) at a new university for a 2024 september start and received an offer. And then I applied for student finance for the new course online a week ago.

But I only realised now that my student finance application has been submitted as a returning student to the new university and not a new student. Because my withdrawal from the old university has not been confirmed yet, is there any way I can apply for student finance for the new university? I have read online about the pn1 form. Can I send the pn1 form for the new university before the withdrawal from the old university has been confirmed?

I did some re - sit exams in early august. It was after some re - sit exams that I applied to the new uni in clearing. And the old university have told me that they will consider my withdrawal after they receive my re- sit results, which will be released in september. My new course starts mid september.

Hi there,

You can apply on the PN1 Form if your new course is full time. You can find the form on our website here https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-forms This form will need to be posted back to us, the address is on the form.

Applications can take 6-8 weeks to process once we have everything from you, so I would advise to send this as soon as possible.

Thanks,
Claire
Okay, thank you for answering. One more question, I saw on governement and nhs website that people who apply for an allied healthcare course as a second undergraduate degree, can be eligible for all 3 years of tuition fee loan. It was last updated in 2017. Is that still true for 2024 for a nursing degree?

Yes, nursing is one of our exception courses so should be eligible for finance for the length of their course.

Thanks,
Claire
Thank you for your help! I tried contacting agents on the phone and on the live chat, but they told me what I am eligible for when it comes a non - healthcare course ( 2 years of tuition fee instead of 3). They didn't seem to know about the funding for allied healthcare courses when they are 2nd degrees. And I have tried multiple times. They did tell me though that I will get 3 years maintenance loan. Glad to know it still applies to those starting.

I didn't initially know about this rule, and was only going to apply for maintenance loan, but I read about it when I was reading about the nhs learning support fund etc. It was last updated in 2017, so a while ago.Unfortunately the agents on the phone weren't updated on this I guess. I am a little worried I would have trouble explaining to them if something goes wrong with my tuition fees.

When you make the application the assessor will see its one of our exception courses and award the finance. Once updated and approved, this will reflect online and then you will receive paperwork in the post.

Thanks,
Claire
Thank you, and one more thing, once my university has confirmed my withdrawal, can I make an application as a new student again online,or do I still have to use the pn1 form? will the online application still show up as me returning or as a new student?

You can try to make the application online once the withdrawal is updated, but this can take some time so it may be best t to apply now on the paper form.

Thanks,
Claire
Thank you. Also adding to my first post, when I applied for student finance for new uni and course online , it shows in my application (2022 - 2027) instead of (2024 - 2027), so as a returning student which isn't true as for (2022 - 2024) I was at a different uni. It automatically came up like that rather than me selecting something. Yeah I think that might be because the first uni hasn't confirmed withdrawal yet.

Is there any way the years can be fixed by either from my end or SFE rather than me making a new application using PN1 form? I am wondering if that's possible so as to avoid more delay in my application getting approved. I am currently in the process of filling in the PN1 form and should be able to send it in a few days.

Hi there,

As you withdrew from the previous course we will 100% need a PN1 form regardless. Once the old uni confirms the withdrawal for the previous course your old course end date will update accordingly so it will not be 2027.

Thanks,
Ross
Thank you, I have filled out the PN1 form and will post it soon. Should I cancel the old application in my SFE account (the one that says 2022 - 2027)as I am sending the PN1? And will my CRN change if I apply for SFE as a new student? I currently already have a CRN and used that CRN when filling in the PN1 form. I also used that CRN when registering at my new uni.

Hi there,

Your Customer Reference Number will always stay the same. Once we process your paper PN1 form we will update your online account correctly.

Thanks, Drew
Hello, now that I have sent a pn1 form, does my old uni need to send a change of circumstances form to confirm the withdrawal from my old course? I have mentioned in my pn1 that I submitted a withdrawal application but withdrawal has not been confirmed yet.

Hi there, Yes, we do still require a Withdrawal from your previous university. Thanks, Angela
Hello, I can now see an entitlement letter on my account, after having made an online application on 21st august and sending a PN1 form on 2nd september.I can see how much maintenance loan I will be getting, but it is showing £0 tuition fee loan. I know that for Nursing BSc course you get tuition fee loans even if you have previous study ( 2 years in my case). What can be done about this now? Would making a new application help?
And as I have mentioned before, everytime I mentioned about funding for nursing as a second degree to an SFE agent on the phone/ live chat, they don't seem to know about it and say that I will not get tuition fee for first year because I have two years previous study. I thought it would be okay once everything has been processed. I am not sure what is the best course of action to take now

Hi there,

Sorry for the confusion here - normally, Nursing courses are exceptions.

It would be best to access your account so we can check this. Can you try sending us a live chat on your account now? One of our team will be able to help.

Thanks, Graeme

Okay, thank you. I have just contacted SFE on live chat and fortunately the adviser seemed to know about nursing being an exception course. They have sent a referral and told me that it might take 5 working days to process.
You're welcome. If you have any further questions you can ask us on this platform.

Thanks, Drew
