There are quite a few medical schools that don’t require A level chemistry, so if you were to take biology and another science or science related subject, you may still be able to apply to medical school, provided you meet the entry requirements. Taking A level chemistry would open up your options significantly, so if you would prefer to take chemistry, I would speak to your college about possibly taking chemistry on the condition that you achieve the required grade in your GCSE maths resit. If they still won’t allow you to take chemistry, you’ll either have to settle for a limited range of medical schools, take a year out or find another college. In any case, it’s probably best to resit GCSE maths and apply to medical schools that don’t use GCSEs as part of the shortlisting process, such as UCL and Imperial (unless the rest of your GCSE grades are all very high).

I was faced with this dilemma this time last year (except I wanted to study neuroscience/psychology). I knew I didn’t have the maths grade for chemistry but narrowly missed the science grade for biology. I ended up settling for psychology as my degree of choice and chose psychology, philosophy and English language and literature (which I later switched with politics), for my A levels. My studies have shown me that my strengths do not lie in the STEM field, as I once had hoped to think, but instead with humanities and social sciences. I now plan on studying law. Sometimes, rejection may just be redirection, but if you are determined to continue on the path to pursue medicine, take some time to think about the route you’d like to take to get there.
