are my dreams of doing dentistry crushed

hello, i received my gcse results and am quite upset as i have worked so hard for them but did get the grades i thought i would get. My results are 776666555U. The U being in furthermaths. I really want to do dentistry and am taking biology chemistry and psychology. Say i work really hard in my a levels and get As and A*s and a really high UCAT score plenty of work experience and get like science olympiads do i have a chance to at least get to the interview stage or will the U really affect me. I am going to apply strategically as my grades are no where near as they should be for a competitive dental applicant and i’m fully aware of that but i’m just wondering how likely is my chance of getting an interview if these other factors are strong. I am really worried and stressed so i would appreciate some honest advice please and if it really will affect my chances of dentistry. I am also hoping my biology and physics grade will go up with a remark so my new grades could be 777766655U. I am four marks of passing furthermaths so is it worth a remark or not.
Hey, it seems unlikely but you might be able to with a really high UCAT score. Just don't show off the U and create a list of your GCSEs without the FM, most people don't even take GCSE FM so you'll probably be fine. And yes, I think it's worth a remark if you were 4 marks off. But the GCSE entry requirements for dentistry is: 7777777.

a high ucat will guarantee you INTERVIEWS from ucat only universities like birmingham, however, you have to reach the minimum requirements for a level predicted and gcses. but your low gcses may mean you do not receive an offer post interview to compare you against other applicants. I also think it’s too early to say, you may struggle with a level bio/chem further down the line. Your best bet is applying to MANY widening participation programmes for specific dentistry unis. ask yourself do you really want this and get those A*s in your a levels, but it will require work! good luck!

Thank you so much! I’m willing to out in the work but once you get an interview then won’t offers be solely based on how well you do in the interview?

sadly not, the ucat, GCSE grades + interview performance are used to further compare between students because many will receive the same score due to the MMI format. ie, sjt band is used in birmingham to distinguish between candidates. Personally, see how you hold up in a level first, you can always take different ones and apply to manchester with a foundation year with non bio/chem a levels (AAA), or do a biomed course and apply graduate entry. GCSE are an important indicator of how well you will fare in a subject but not the only one, if you score consistently well in ur y12 mocks u are fine. Or you can also take a gap year with your a levels when you achieve high and apply again, as more unis will take you on as you have achieved grades > predicted which they hold more weighting on.

there are many hurdles and im sure u can work past them but just be prepared to work double to account for your gcses whilst others will have 9-8s, such as a high ucat and being apart of widening participation programmes that will secure u an interview if u meet certain criteria. it also removes the safety net of if you achieve a low ucat, but being rejected from “hollistic/gcse>ucat focused unis” such as cardiff due to lower gcse. All im saying is, it’s a tough road, and I want to be honest❤️ but remember you CAN and WILL be able to do this.

ADVICE:

HIGH UCAT + AMAZING INTERVIEW PERFORMANCE + WIDENING PARTICIPATION PROGRAMMES/UNIVERSITIES SUMMER SCHOOLS
