Hi, it may be helpful to know is that the fact that a uni is a Russel Group uni doesn't necessarily make it the best med school. In fact because all med schools in the UK are regulated by the GMC they are all technically the same. And if you are going to work in the NHS then it doesn't matter either as the people hiring are blinded to which med school you attended. So it doesn't matter.

The best medical school for anyone is therefore the one that they have the best chance in getting into. You have to be strategic in your application and much will depend on your UCAT and predicted grades. You will have to work hard to do well in both to have the greatest choice of unis.

The G4 in English Language may be worth a resit if you could get it up to a 7 or 6. It may be worth exploring if they will let you resit this year.

Good luck. 👍
As above, RG is meaningless for med.

If the minimum for the course or uni is 5 or above then yes, it will discount you from being considered.

I don’t know how many unis will accept a 4, but ideally you need to retake it to maximise your options.

Hi I want to do medicine in a russel group university do I have a chance with 7 6's in gcse including maths and eng lit and 2 4's in eng lang and computing but if I get good A level results such as A* A A in bio chem and geo also right now I'm in year 11 and recieved my gcse results do I have a chance?

In short - retake your English Lang if you are seriously considering medicine. With a 4, its most likely a show stopper for now.

Do you realise that it doesnt actually matter where you train as a doctor?

There is no special prestige about training at an RG - you dont get more money or a nicer set of scrubs, or glitter on your degree certificate. Its the same degree - with exactly the same worth - and you end up in the same junior doctor positions. No-one curtseys to you mid-corridor because you went to Bristol, those graduating from Sunderland are not sent to the back of the queue for the toilet.
If you want to do Med for all the right reasons (ie. altruism), you wouldn't care where you were going to Uni, and if 'look at me' glory is that important to you, you might need to to do a swift rethink on your career.

While I agree with you in principle that where you study doesn't matter, I think it's quite understanable that people who have just done their GCSES may not be fully familiar with the medical schools pathways.

also parents often talk about RG unis, so do schools and the oftrn dont fully understand the medical schools accreditation process. So its not surprising that people starting to look at med arent fully sighted on it.

They are here and asking questions to learn. It doesn't mean that asking the question means that people are going into med with the wrong drivers.

But I absolutely agree with you that med is something you cannot go into for anybody else and you need to understand the realities of it before diving in.

How come you've already sat GCSE if you are in Year 11?

Hi , thank you for this ! I have a questions Brunel is has just been allowed to let uk home students study medicine before it was only for international students, would this affect the university teachings in anyway ? Or make it not a great uni ? Please let me know

It just means that the med school has been authorised to extend to UK students as well as international students by the office for students which regulates where the med school spaces are. It means that the UK government are prepared to add more med school places. Brunel is one of the unis with more places added.

Not sure what you mean whether it effects the quality of teaching?

All med schools in the UK are regulated by the GMC to ensure standards are maintained.
