help with modules!!

Hello!!

So, I'm due to start the Media course at University of Kent in the coming weeks, but I'm so so confused by how the modules work. How many credits is too many? Why do so many of the modules for my subject area seem to be in the Spring term?

I'm trying to make sense of it all but it just keeps confusing me and nobody seems to be able to give me a straight answer.. I need to get this submitted ASAP too, so any help would be appreciated please!! I'm getting really stressed out and emotional over the whole thing :'>

Hi @mofumafu !

Firstly, huge congratulations on your place on the media course, we are so excited to have you join the Kent family!

Hopefully I can give you some help with modules, it's super confusing when you first start but please don't stress! It will all be sorted and you can always contact the media team at the university if you are really stuck.

To begin, you need 120 credits to complete the year, and so choose modules with credits that add up to 120.

Typically this means either 4 modules of 30 credits, or 8 modules of 15 (this is more common in 1st year as it gives you a wider variety of subjects to learn in your first year).

So you'll be choosing 8 modules, 4 in the autumn term and 4 in the spring term. Some courses will have compulsory modules which you have to select, and some will have an either or choice (for example for my course I had to do either ethics or theoretical philosophy). The rest you'll be able to decide which topics you want to do provided its 4 in each term. On KentVision, you should be able to press the module code e.g. MED5050 and learn more about the topic to help you decide

Also, if you aren't sold on a few of the optional modules, you may have the options to choose a wild module (check if you are as some courses don't allow this), which are modules from any course, so you could do an english module for example if you wanted!

Modules are usually set in terms depending on lecturer's availability so that's perhaps why a few more are available in spring, but you should find enough to meet the 4 and 4 requirement.

I hope that has made things clearer and puts your mind at ease, let me know if you have any further questions.

Happy module choosing!
Gabby
