Perfect. Knowing exactly what BTEC you're doing avoid the risk of giving misleading advice. So although your original statement that "
a BTEC is considered to be 2 A levels" was incorrect, it is correct to say that
this particular BTEC
is the equivalent of 2 International A levels.
Most universities in the UK base their entry requirement on assumption that candidates will have done three A levels, so gaining entry to university with the equivalent of just 2 will be a challenge. With the equivalent of just 2 A levels and your EPQ, your options will be limited. You've said above that "I was told I could get more than a pass", which isn't very specific in terms of grades! Do you not have any better idea of what grade you achieved in each unit? If we assume that "more than a pass" means a merit - i.e. that you gain a merit in each unit - then your overall grade for the qualification would be MM. That's worth 64 UCAS points. You EPQ could bring-in an additional 16 points (for a grade C) or 20 points (for a grade B). So let's assume you're on a total of 80 UCAS points.
If we search for UK universities which will accept 80 UCAS points for a business- or entrepreneurship-related degree, we find these (for example):
•
Business Management BA (Hons) at Birmingham City University - they want 112 UCAS points normally, but this course is still in Clearing for this year where they say they'll accept just 64 UCAS points. (
details)
•
Entrepreneurship and Business with Foundation Year BA (Hons) at University of Portsmouth - they want just 32 UCAS points (the three-year "normal" version of this course requires 112-120 UCAS points). (
details)
•
Business and Management (Entrepreneurship) BA (Hons) via a Foundation Year at Cardiff Metropolitan University - they want just 32 UCAS points (again, three-year "normal" version of this course requires 112 UCAS points). (
details)
So, if you were to achieve 80 UCAS points you'd be applying to weaker universities, and would be forced to add a foundation year to the start of the course or to apply via Clearing. If that doesn't really appeal, then you have three choices:
• Get better grades than I guessed you might get above. Your BTEC
can generate 180 UCAS points for a D*D*, and the EPQ can generate 28 points for an A*. Between the two of them, that's 140 UCAS points. For comparison, AAB at A level would be 136 points and AAA would be 144. You'd still be limited to universities will set their entry requirements based upon UCAS points, but you'd have far more options that with just 80 points.
• Take an A level alongside the second year of your BTEC. This won't be easy, but would mean that you would not be limited to those universities which accept UCAS points, as many universities are happy to accept a BTEC Level 3 Diploma (the equivalent of 2 A levels) if taken alongside an additional A level.
• Add an extra year to your BTEC, and thereby take the additional five units required to gain a Pearson BTEC International Level 3
Extended Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. That's the equivalent of 3 A levels.
By the way, I can confirm that the mandatory units for the Pearson BTEC International Level 3 Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (720 GLH) are: 2, 3, 7, 33, 34, 35 and 37 - which you've either already taken or will be taking in the forthcoming year. You are also required to take one of a set of optional units, one of which is 36. So you units are all good.
