GYG: Michelle's Version: University Edition

I start mid-September so this is just in preparation for that. I'm studying Politics and Philosophy. I did not constantly update my A level version of GYG but it did help me get my footing for revising consistently .

My aim for this edition of GYG is to build rebuild my routine. As well as growing my grades I like to put more effort into growing myself. I want to make more time for my hobbies, learn new ways to approach learning. I want to grow, I've used the word 'grow' a lot, more disciplined outside of just my grades.

End of Week
I was supposed to do this on Sunday as it would have actually been a week. I'm studying BA Philosophy and Politics. In the next couple of hours I will be in my third lecture, Evidence and Argument 1. I've been so fortunate to learn what I want and to pick the modules which most interest me, as well as actually having lecturers that share information engagingly.

Outside of my academic life, I feel like I have been adjusting back to my sleeping routine well. I will admit I was better at it at the start of the week. I've attempted a new club/society. It s Pole Fitness. I knew it would be difficult but I was hoping, although I knew I'd fail at first, to be able to at least pull myself up. I've also gotten back into conditioning and that's been fun to get used to again.

I'm not entirely sure what other societies I may join.

I didn't realise how many times I'd put my data on just to find my way.

End of Week 3
Its midnight right now so its very clear that my sleeping routine has not been consistent. I did my laundry and retwisted my hair and then spent the afternoon sleeping.

I wish I had more interesting things to share but I don't. I spent £4.99 this week on Netflix just to watch Heartstopper again. I don't really like many shows on Netflix but I've got to get my moneys worth now.

I missed my first lecture already, I won't be doing that again. It was also the first week of seminars and that was nice. I'll share what my favourite module, lecture and seminar are? I really enjoy reading Plato's Republic for Classical Political Thought. It might be the most interesting reading I have to do at the moment, that might be because its also in dialogue form. I think because its a bit like Dramas, in relation to its writing format, I can actually hear distinct voices when reading. I thing my Philosophy of Art lectures are the most attention grabbing, this module also counts as a seminar so I might have it as my favourite seminar as well.

I still find it difficult to share my opinions in small discussions. I know I haven't mentioned this on here but I spent a lot of my time in my A-level classes not talking to my classmates. I don't really start off relationships very talkative and it doesn't help that in lessons I prefer to just focus on the teacher/ slides. I will say its less of an insecurity for me now but it would be nice if I was more willing to share my thoughts on things in the moment.

I hate walking up these HILLS!

i haven't gotten round to watching heartstopper yet but it sounds really good! your course sounds so interesting!! if you want to work on contributing more in small discussions, maybe you could set yourself a goal every time you have small discussion to make 1 contribution and then slowly increase the number of contributions you make each discussion? that helped me open up at school

End of W/C 14.10.24 because I don't remember what week I stared counting
Thank you for the advice, I'll definitely try to incorporate that habit.

I did in fact miss more lectures. I have gone to most of them but I've missed at least one a week. I hope after reading week I'll be on a routine I like that won't allow me to skip certain lectures.

I have been trying to figure out how to make notes from my readings. I know how I want to do so for my readings of Plato's Republic because I'm treating the notes as if I am being told a story, which is helped by the fact that it is written in dialogue form. I am not entirely sure how I am supposed to write useful notes for 11 page readings, any suggestions would be helpful.

I did finish watching 'Heartstopper', could not stop crying at all. I've also found some use for Netflix, I'm trying to get through 'Ripley'. It's really interesting to read the comments of this rendition of the book. I only found this show because I watched a short YouTube video comparing it to 'Saltburn'.

I also wrote my first paper, it was only 500 words. I think I have to thank my A level English Literature experience for making me less afraid of all the writing tasks. If only this had transferred to reading weekly.

my advice on making notes from reading

if you read texts for an essay question that requires you to quote from the source, i would create a three-column table

first column: the quote
second column: the page number of the quote, text title and author, or anything needed for the citation
third column: if necessary, what you think of the quote

i use Google docs

Thank you beautifulworld, I'm definitely going to report back on how I find that not taking.

I have to be honest with you. This week has been kind of a blur for me. Nothing notable has happened this week.

Luckily, reading week is about to start. I have a paper due on Thursday. I just finished reading the section its based upon and I need to complete the plan today. I'd at least like to start the plan today so I can write for the next four days.

I would have just needed to plan it today but my laptop is running low on disc space and my search engine wasn't working properly because of that. Fun tip for anyone who is in university and has the Sims4, do not update the game as soon as the update comes out, you never have enough space.

I also have a decent amount of reading to catch up on, which is fine but I also have to be prepared before Friday. My friend is spending the weekend with me and I am so excited to see them again.

I did watch Rivals this week, I haven't finished the last episode but its fun to watch. Katherine Parkinson and Danny Dyer's characters are my favourite duo. I've also started watching IT Crowd. I've only watched three episodes but I am in awe in the way they've written the comedy. Not only do I find it funny, I find it interesting and I guess artistic in some sense,

Anyways I am going to take a break now.

I'm typing this entry on Saturday instead of Sunday because I've got a lot planned for tomorrow.
I've got to finish doing my hair, complete reading for future papers, complete my weekly readings and do my cooking for the week.
I didn't do an entry for last week because I got very tired from my friend's visit. It was lovely to have them here we did some baking with some of my flatmates. I bought a couple more books. I think my new aim in life is to have either read or own all Haruki Murakami books, I've read some that I don't own and vice versa. I didn't know tea shops were a thing.

I spent the first half of reading week writing an essay. I'm so glad I completed it early even when things did not follow the schedule I put on. I have another essay due in two weeks. I not sure which question to choose though, so I am asking for your opinion.

1.

What, in your view, is the most significant challenge to Tolstoy's expression theory? Is there a way to modify his theory to avoid this challenge?

2.

Critically evaluate Hume's proposal that ideal critics set the standard of taste.

3.

Are perfect forgeries less beautiful than the original works they copy?

Its also no where near Christmas yet and I'm already playing Christmas music, keep getting the urge to rewatch Dash and Lily and keep getting excited to watch my first Christmas Doctor Who episode.

So I decided to do the taste[2] question. It was fun to write actually. I also got my mark back for my first official essay, its good for the first essay. I do want to know how I work on deeper analysis though, any tips will be appreciated.

For my next Art essay I'm deciding between the paradox of tragedies or fictional characters. The second half of this module has a much more interesting selection and I am very excited to write about it. I also have a Global South essay due in two weeks, I hope I complete my plan properly before Friday, so I can start writing.

Although I miss my home friends very much, I'm surprised that the lack of friendship at University hasn't affected my mental health. It might be because I talk to my flatmates quite often and I have things to keep me busy. It might also be the fact that I don't think my type of people are at this University. I finally watched Hairspray, too!

I've been reading Murakami's novelist as a vocation, I'm really enjoying his essay writing. The use of brackets to showcase his personality here and there is funny. I also listened to the Wicked soundtrack, MULTIPLE times, best Friday so far. Its safe to say I am enjoying myself.

Congrats on you're art essay grade!!!

I think you should consider reaching out to find new friends...no need to change your personality or but sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to you finding amazing riends!!

Good Luck !
