Hello Everyone!
I'm going to be starting as a Degree Apprentice in the next few weeks in Barrow, I've been informed that it is very important to reach out and to connect with as many apprentices as I can as I will most likely be going to University with them and it will be good to help each other over the next few years. My Apprenticeship is in Engineering and I will be in the Weapons Department, I understand that this is a very small department and that most Engineers are in the Submarines Department. I just wanted to create a space for us Barrow folk to hopefully connect with each other and build some good relationships before we start in the next few weeks.
All the best, Charlie.

Not an apprentice anymore but I did spend 2 years working as an engineer at the Barrow Yard until 2021. Interesting times and interesting work. The BAES apprenticeships are very good and the opportunities they bring are good too.

Congratulations.

Hey Charlie, I'm also going to be starting next week as an apprentice in the engineering department.
Are U part of the product design and engineering degree scheme?

Regards
Rhishi

I’m starting my degree apprenticeship in barrow in a few months. How did you find the first year of the apprenticeship if your still enrolled there?

Hello. It's been great so far, I've just finished Uni until September and currently on my second placement, all has been going great and you'll be here in no time, good luck!

Do you attend the Lancaster campus for university? It’s the only one I’ve seen for the PMDA course, but an 1 hour and a half each way doesn’t seem too feasible.

Even worse, we have to get a 2 hour coach for university study, the degree itself is from Lancaster but not studied at the University. We get this coach 1 day a week and it replaces a work day.

Hi mate, you're pretty lucky as I was part of the last intake for Weapons and there are currently only 8 of us, compared to the hundreds of submarine apprentices. It's very hard to find information for weapons specifically as we are much smaller so that's why you've struggled. We all currently study 2 hours from work, the Degree itself is affiliated with Lancaster University, and from September - May you will get a coach there and back once a week for the day to study. We get half term breaks but we work the days that we are not in University, as that's what we are getting paid to do. If you have any other questions feel free to ask, I guess we will get to know each other soon 👍️

So where actually do we study, in Lancaster, at the main campus or is it a separate one ? Look forward to meeting you all

I don't think I'm able to say exactly where we study, as you can imagine BAE don't want this to be public knowledge, but it is not at Lancaster University. The degree itself is from Lancaster University, but delivered elsewhere. We are transported to study once a week and paid for this day as part of our apprenticeship, there is nothing to worry about here, I would maybe say freshen up on your maths a little if you aren't coming straight from college but it's not the end of the world if you don't.

Hi, I have an offer to do engineering in barrow and have been struggling to decide between taking up this apprenticeship or going to imperial to study physics. Just wondering how you are finding the work and if you see yourself continuing to work at BAE after your apprenticeship.

Hello, I do think it depends on where in the business you end up. Like I've mentioned I am in weapons which is completely separate to submarines, meaning our work week and work in general is completely different. I honestly love it, University is very easy as they understand that we are working so we are given plenty of time and help for assignments and lots of revision for exams. The work itself is great, rotating between placements let's you learn a lot about different areas of engineering and actually put your knowledge into practice. The only thing I would say is that barrow is quite quiet and there is not much beauty, but there are many towns around it and the lakes just up the road to spend your time. I do see myself staying after the 5 years and continuing with the company, there are lots of opportunities to progress and lots of opportunities for you to advance in your studies that are fully paid for, such as your masters. The pay is also great for an apprentice wage, and it's great experience to have on your CV.

Thank you so much for your reply. I was also wondering by roughly how much does the salary increase throughout the apprenticeship as this wasn’t very clear in the contract. I imagine it would be similar for weapons and submarines.
