Anxious about progression to second year of study

I will preface my predicament with this: I have 'finished the first year of my course/degree, this course is no longer offered at my university (the university of Brighton), it will not be available for me to repeat my first year in it.

As the title suggests, I am very anxious about progressing to my second year of study. My personal tutor and other staff members have assured me that it is likely that I will be able to progress into my second year. However, I am worried that the Exam Board will not allow me to progress, as it is ultimately their decision.

I failed to complete one essay for one of my modules after my second attempt (summer resits) due to several mitigating circumstances. I had a debilitating mental breakdown and a flare up in my chronic pain, alongside my medication not being delivered for over a week. I am still completing said essay as I know that if I am able to continue I will have to pass the module regardless (my seminar grade is a pass).

I have a friend who was able to continue into their second year of study under similar circumstances, they had to complete their failed module work alongside their second year studies. But I'm still very uncertain about this. I will not know the exam boards decision until 2 days before I am due to move back to Brighton, and into the shared house I have already put down-payments on.

My parents and I cannot afford to pay back student finance.

My questions are:
Just HOW likely is it that I will be able to progress into my second year?
What are my options?
Will I have to choose a different course and complete another 1st year?

Many thanks in advance,
Any advice is welcome.

Hi,

I wouldn't worry too much, if the worst was to happen you can dispute this with the University. I struggled in my Second Year, and only managed onto my Third Year because of a Compensated Pass. Given you have kept the University informed of reasons that affected your education, they might be more lenient. After all, they're making money from you!

They might offer you a choice to resit the entire year, you will have to pay for this typically as you would any other year but it does mean you get another chance at completing your studies.

Hope it all goes well, and good luck!

If you need to resit the year (which I doubt) student finance covers one extra year in case you need to repeat a year. However since its 1st year you might get compensated if it's just one module. Don't stress about it you'll be just fine.

Hi there,

As you said, it is down to the exam board and your university rules may differ from others as they often do differ slightly, so I couldn't say for sure whether you would pass or not.

However, if you have spoken to your module tutors and help teams at your university and they have said it is likely you will pass, I would think that they are the people who are most likely to know and have the best idea about this. As others have said, it is your first year and sometimes you might be compensated for one module so try not to worry too much.

Either way, you can't do anything about the grade now except focusing on the assignment you are currently completing so try and focus on this and do as well as you can do and try to put the worry out of your mind for now.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.
