Goldsmiths or Reading?

Hi lovelies

I was offered a place at Goldsmiths University to study History and Politics on results day and accepted it and have since put a deposit down on the accommodation and was pretty much set to go. Since then, I’ve been having so many doubts about it, the main one being it’s small campus (i wanted a bigger, more vibrant university) I applied to Reading on a whim earlier today and was offered a place on the english language and linguistics course with a foundation year and now i’m completely stuck. Reading has everything I want in a University and a lot of my teachers went there and recommend it highly, the only issue is I don’t really want to do a foundation course and I have asked the Uni if i can do the same course without the foundation and i’m waiting for the response. I’d be really grateful for any further info about both uni’s and any advice you have to offer xx

Good evening @violets4rosess ,

It's great to hear you are considering the University of Reading. I am a 2nd year student studying Ecology (BSc). Hopefully, I can give you a bit of an overview of the university.

The reason I chose the Univeristy of Reading over my other 4 options was because of the library. This may sound silly, but I found some of the other univeirstyes that had a very small and out of date Library. I hadn't noticed this aspect u til I did my open days, but when visiting the university of Readinf, I did a library tour, and the university has a 5 floors full of academic and non academic texts. This was a deal bracket for me personally, as I realised one of the places I would he spending a lot of time would be the library, so this swayed my decision. At the time, I hadn't realised the library was open 24 hours a day except on Sundays, so this was a huge help when it came to summer and winter exams.

Since starting at the University of Reading, I have discovered a whole new array of sports and societies that I had never realised existed. The university has a lot of opportunities available for students and the best part is most of them are free. For example, on occasions like Halloween, Christmas, eid, and other main celebrations, the university puts on optional events for students to attend. These activities always have an array of things to do, and I have met some wonderful people at these events.

Similarly, the lectures are good, I must admit they can be intimidating at first as some of the rooms can be quite large, but you get used to it very quickly, and it becomes like home. I wouldn't change this aspect, as I feel like being out of my comfort zone has made me more confident. The lectures are amazing quality and they are always interesting. Most of the time, the lecture will have a 10 minute question time optional for students in case anyone has any questions, and this can be very helpful when you are stuck on a certain topic.

I hope this information helps you understand a bit about the university and if you have any questions please let us know.

All the best
Ella

Ask if you can defer your Goldsmiths place until 2025 entry -check any penalty fees for cancelling your 2014 accommodation first. Then go to Reading's next Uni Open Day - listen to the course presentation, look around, and ask questions. You then have until January to decide if you still want Goldsmiths, or you want to apply for Reading instead.
