Gift year

How does a gift year work? I need to go back for one module in january for the month and i am finished.
Do i have to pay back the tuition fees and maintenance loan?
Or is the 'gift year' free? And do they pay for the whole year tuition or just the term im attended as currently SF have it set up to pay them for all terms when im not there
