Talking about wider reading in CS personal statement?

Hi, I'm seeing mixed opinions on writing about wider reading for computer science. I would have thought that it'd be better to focus on hands-on things like projects and work experience because the subject is a practical one. I haven't mentioned any reading - I am talking about 2 essay competitions and a course to show I have done research into the subject and learned about things beyond the curriculum, but as I am applying to some top unis where a more mathematical/theoretical approach is preferred I am wondering if this is enough? My teacher references do include the books I read but not sure if that is sufficient

Hello and sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

Wider reading for CS is fine. Of course, if you have a range of things done (projects, reading, podcasts etc), then that's ideal.
