Do i have good enough grades to do medicine in Queen Marys?

Hi everyone,

Well, im in a bit of a pickle. I decided i wanted to do medicine but the thing is, im not sure if my gcses are good enough for Queen Mary. I got: 888887777. I plan to work my ass off and do an EPQ just to lower the grade i need for A levels. Perhaps do a programme for contextual added too.

And, if so, is there any, tiny, tinyyyy hope.....

....that i could do (dentistry) there instead? If i got an A for my EPQ, two a stars and an A as my predicted or would that be too low? I bet i sound like a dreamer but oh well.
Hi!

Can I ask what A-Levels you’re doing too? The GCSE’s universities look for are normally where you must have a 7/8 or above so you are most likely fine. As medicine and dentistry are highly competitive, they may be more likely to choose applicants with higher grades. However, as none of yours fall below what they expect, you still have a chance.

Doing an EPQ and achieving at least an A is necessary, as most sixth forms have it as a mandatory subject. You will be less likely to be passed over if you have done one too.

I would also say to work hard to get your predicted grades at least one above the necessary requirements, as in being predicted A*A*A for a course that requires A*AA. The most important part for applying to medicine/dentistry is getting good experience. You could start emailing places now or searching for can offer it or ask if you can follow someone for a week- it’s hard to get but extremely rewarding.

I’d also like to advise that you make a choice between medicine and dentistry as soon as you can (before year 13). Most places don’t accept 2 personal statements and it’s difficult to write one that extends to both subjects as it’s best to be clear and concise to the universities.

Getting an above average score on the UCAT/BMAT will increase your chances of getting as well.
